Ok am thinking about getting a canon G9. I love taking pictures and processing the raw files. But there are many places i go where it is impractial to take a dslr, and since having it i almost never take pictures of friends or family, they seem to hide when i have my camera out.

So my thoery is this the G9 gives me the abilty to shoot in raw, and attach my speedlight if needed. Yet it remains light and portable and not scary to my family members.

So what i'm asking is has anyone used the camera? Can you still shoot in raw and use the P+S modes? Will it subsitue for my DSLR when i dont want to carry it about?

Hi Toothie,

I have just bought it and really enjoy using it, I am sure though that RAW is not available on the "auto" setting, but is on all other settings. Also, the view finder I find is worse than useless, you will need to use live view.

I can highly recommend it, a good camera.

Live view doesn't bother me, as i used it all the time on my ixus i found it really hard to get used to using a viewfinder again when i got my 350d.

I suggest saving the money and using aggression on the family members :)
Use the Barbara Woodhouse method when your subject is about to flit........SIT!

 DF

I say go for it :)

The people i have spoke to about this lil beast say its a great camera :)

Will it subsitute your dslr??? Possibly not, but it does have RAW... and takes great images... so it would be a lighter option instead of your dslr, i guess :)

Consider a G7 if you want most of the G9's features at a lower price. There's always CHDK if you want RAW. ;)
