I am using a Canon 28-105. I do a lot of close shots - vegetation/insects - and I am wondering whether a true macro lens would give me better results? If so what length would people advise - I'd like to be able to use it hand held.

Thanks

What length do you find yourself using on the 28-105 mostly?
If it is 105 then you want 100mm + I would imagine.

The real deciding factor is this: Do you have problmes getting close enough with the 28-105? If so then you need to do something.

A dedicated 100 to 150mm macro lens would be perfect. Looking at £160+
Next is extension tubes to use with the 28-105. About £50-£80 but won't let you get as close
Finally you can get a close up adapter. Unsure or price and magnification - but I know usually cheapest.

Hope this helps

What is your budget on this lens? The macro lenses are excellent for the close up stuff. Depends on what you want to shoot as to whether you can use the 60mm macro or 100mm macro, or 105mm Sigma.

There are loads on here with the 105mm Sigma and they love it. I have the canon 100mm and it's a great lens.

Hi and welcome
You will find a dedicated macro lens with give you results far superior to the 28-105'
As for what length it depends on your budget but all the makes around the 100mm mark would be fine and are cheaper than the 150-180mm and fairly easy to handhold.
