have Nikon D300S what difference will I see if I change to D500 really need advice am retired
 
Better iq, better high iso, faster af, lighter bank balance

Only you can decide if the trade off with the bank balance is worth it. What is it about the D300s you need to change?
 
It's a huge upgrade in many ways. Higher res, has a tilting touch screen, much better ISO capabilities, the buttons light up for when shooting in the dark! It's got wi-fi so you can control it via your smart phone or transfer images out in the field, it's faster [10fps] and has a huge buffer, 4K video, the ever popular joystic ... only you can say if you need it or want it enough to buy it though
 
If you shoot wildlife or sport be great ,or you fancy spending some of your kids inheritance to enjoy a more modern camera go for it
otherwise keep your 300s and have a holiday
