Hello!

I'm wanting to upgrade from my current crop (50D) to full frame.

I know there are rumours about the 5D MKiii kicking about, but I can't decide whether to just go ahead and buy the 5D MKii or wait (for how long?) for the newer model?

Any advice?

what do you shoot?
If you want to photograph fast stuff, you might want to wait for a newer model (which will likely have a better AF system), but for most things the 5DII would be excellent. You might be waiting a while for the 5DIII still, it's been rumoured for a while.

The 5DII's AF is similar to your 50D, have you ever found the 50D inadequate in this respect?

I shoot portraits mainly - nothing fast moving. Low light performance is a must.

I've hired a 5D MKii and I'm very happy with the way it shoots. Was just wondereding if now was a bad time to buy...

Thanks! :)

5D Mk11? Booootiful camera!

Buy it, if I had the case it would be done already........ or if I had even more 1DS mkVI. Why do weddings and house buying have to be so exspensive, no new toys for me!!!!

Never a bad time to buy. :D

Any new one will probably be towards the end of the year, and will be at full RRP for a while before prices fall to more sensible levels.
The 5D2 is a good price RIGHT NOW! :)

i say buy it too - although you are buying the 5d2 quite late in it's life cycle, it will still be (in image quality terms) on of the best canon dslrs you can get. it will still be that when the 5d3 comes out.

and in any case, when the 5d3 does come out it's likely to be priced at around the £2000-2500 mark just like the 5d2 was when it first came out.

i'm sure i will upgrade to the 5d3 eventually, but not until later in it's life cycle when the price has gone done.

compared with some of the newer cameras like the 7d, 60d and even 600d, yes it's lacking a few of the newer toys (like built in remote flash transmitter), but you'd need to prize my 5d2 from my cold dead hands before i'd give it up. i love mine, and i've learned to love it's quirks.

Buy buy buy!!!

When the mkiii comes out it'll probably be crazy money anyway lol such is life

I have a 1Dmk3 and a 5D mk2, love them both for different reasons....for no particular reason...buy one!!

I have just ordered the 5d mark ii upgraded from a 30d. Mainly for studio and urban. For the price you can't go wrong. Can't wait to start using full frame finally : )

You know.. There isn't any feeling like owning something special. Whether the person behind the camera is special is another question... The 5D2 is special and I love using it every time I do. That's not going to go away when the mk3 comes out...

do it, do it, do it

pft all you people waiting for the 5DmkIII waste of time to be fair :p, the 5DmkIV will be out soon enough now thats where my money is :)

I have a 40D which I love, and have kept as backup (and my wife has shown an interest in it). I bought a 2nd hand 5D mkII last year and love it. I thought I'd use both cameras, but the 40D hasn't had a look in since.

It's just a smashing camera as far as I'm concerned. If you've got some nice lenses to go on it, even better!

I had the same dilemma at christmas, I went for the 5d mk ii and love it. I upgraded from a 40d. What helped me decide to buy is price, the 5d mk ii works with photoshop cs4, it takes cf cards, and my exsisting pc just about cope with 21 mp photos (I have ended up with some 60mb raw files!). If I had waited for the mk iii, I would probably need new pc, new Photoshop and maybe all new cards too.

as everyone else said just buy it now.
i wasin the same boat,be it in the other camp.
i had been wanting a d700 but kept hearing that the d800 will be out next month or the one after,so kept putting it of.finaly i decided just to buy one,it will do everything i need at the moment and more.
when the d800 comes out i willl wait for any bugs to be fixed and the price to drop before buying it,so even if i had waited for that would still wait sometime after release to buy.

Wait until the 5D M3 comes out then you'll see a price drop in the M2 and you will be very happy!

It doesn't always work like that though. The mkIII will cost a whole lot more and demand for mkII's new and used might actually increase sustaining the prices.

Look what happened to the price of the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L when the mkII came out, virtually nothing. The mk2 price is still sat a few hundred £££'s above the outgoing mk1's.

Again to the OP, buy now and enjoy.

I feel really guilty when threads like this one come along, as I have a 5d2 and a couple of L lens to go with it, and as we all know it's a great piece of kit. The only trouble is I'm that busy with playing golf, I don't use it nearly enough as I should do, but just can't make the decision to let it go, it just reminds me of the old film cameras compared to the 1.6 crop of my 20D.

Noticed this tread and had to take a look...:)

Jessops have the Mkii with the 24-105mm L as a package...

(only online mind) for £2288.95....

I'm looking to up grade from the 40D and most of my lens won't fit..

Would you still go for it...

Ps would still keep the 40D and the wifes got the 450D so not to bad, but would love more L glass.

I was in the same boat last year wanting to upgrade from the 50D to the 5Dmk2. I struggled with noise on the 50D so took the plunge and have never looked back. I kept hold of the 50D for about 6 months but it just never came out of the camera bag after I upgraded.

Go and get one. They're a good price now too.

You could be waiting 6 months or 18 months, nobody knows.

The way you are looking at it is all wrong. When the price of a MkIII drops to a reasonable level then everyone will be talking about the MkIV rumours.

If you need it now, buy it now. It will last you a good few years.

I had a 40D with EF-S lenses and I went to Jessops in December, saw the manager and explained I planned to buy the 5D MK ii with 3 L lenses (16-35, 50f1.2 + 24-105), I showed him a print out of the current prices from www.camerapricebuster.co.uk and he did the whole lot for £250 less than I could have bought everything individually from via the price buster website. Needless to say I did the deal as I'd much rather buy stuff in a shop than online. Plus I got £185 cashback from Canon who are doing loads of cashback deals at the moment.

The moral of the story is the Jessops managers have PLENTY of room to negociate.

IMO for what it's worth I dont see a mkIII for a while, even though the focussing needs improving.

Only buy it if you need/want full frame otherwise I personally would get the 7D.

For what you get for such as the 40D you may as well keep it as a back up.

YES! For your purposes 5DMkII is the one

Just pulled the trigger today - FF at last! Upgrading from 60D! The only downside is the lack of remote ETTL like the 60/7D has... Never mind :)

HDEW are spot on with price right now!!

yes ! definitely do so ! you won't regret it !

and for such found advice you'll need to let play with it a bit !

I'm in the same boat too. I'm holding out on the Mkiii. Three years old the Mkii is and technology has moved on so fast since then. This is not denying that the 5D2 is a superb camera.

The Focus On Imaging convention is on next month in Birmingham, I would wait until then and see what announcements are made. If you are lucky enough to go, the 5D2's may be available at a price cheaper than any you've seen so far.

Rgds

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I've taken it all onboard and I've gone and ordered the 5D MKii.

: )

Can't wait!

I'll then run this one for a couple of years, and upgrade to the 5D MKiii once the price comes down.

Thanks.
