Shopping in the U.S for canon, glass/filters/flashguns

Have a friend travelling around Florida shortly and I'm keen to buy some new glass (mostly a uwa)Though if the prices are great then it would rude not to stock up! Probably a few filters too, Are Lee big stoppers in short supply overseas?

Anyone done the same? Advice on warranty? duty to pay when coming back?

Any input greatly appreciated
 
I bought a 100-400 in florida a few years back paid $1400 (exchange rate was £1=$1.90) so got a really good deal. put the lens in my rucksack and the box in my suitcase, came through customs OK.
 
Last time I did this I knew I was buying gear out there (Canada for me), and took an empty camera bag with me on the way out.. just filled with all manner of sundry items. Bought a Nikon F90X (this was quite a long time ago), 35-70 f2.8, 20mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, a Monfrotto 190QCB tripod, 141RC head, SB28 flashgun, and a load of filters.

Flat packed the boxes and put in my checked in baggage.

I just came back with my bag full of my cameras and walked through customs.

No guilt from me either... they get enough import duty off me through buying parts for my Mustang... they can sod off.

I'm from the u.s. but I have not checked this out. I will give my local shop a call the day after tomorrow (busy tomorrow) to see if they have any in stock. I'm not from Florida but I'm not that far from it either (Texas).
 
Just because others don't get caught it doesn't mean you won't. How lucky/unlucky do you think you are generally? :)
 
Texas close to florida?, well I suppose its closer than California a days drive at least and a long one at that Houston is the closer end I suppose, 4 hours from the pan handle then 3 or 4 to the Disney area? I did Myrtle beach to Orlando the other week.

As for buying over there done it and got away with it but other haven't I guess. Take the chance and make a big saving or own up and still make a saving just not so big.
