Shooting TTL flash with a shoot through umbrella - any issues?

I recently purchased a TTL cable and haven't really used it yet as generally use manual flash when off camera.

However I was wondering if anyone has tried using TTL flash off camera with a shoot through and how it worked?

Might just save me a little time if I don't have to keep tweaking the power output on the flash until it's just right, or if I change the shot slightly

It should 'just work' as its measuring from the pre flash, but you might have to break the distance information by angling the flashgun head slightly. (depending on gun and camera)

Yeah I was thinking it should be fine tbh but I wanted to double check there wasn't anything I was missing before I tried... sounds like it should work as planned more or less from what you've said

The only caveat is that the flashgun takes the distance from the lens focus distance when it believes it's on the camera, that's why you have to tilt the head slightly, if it thinks it's bouncing it has to ignore the distance info.

Or could I not just add a bit of flash compensation to cope with the extra distance?

You could but it adds a further item of unpredictability. For me, the point of ettl should be set and forget, if i want to twiddle with settings, then manual is much more predictable Have an experiment and see how it goes.

Yeah I will have a play around with it and see how it goes but will try what you said.

I dont understand why you would want to use ttl through a brolly, isn,t manual best, even though you have to keep tweaking it, I think you will have to more with ttl, also when you want more or less power you will be constantly use expo comp.
