Anybody got a good basic setup and tips for getting photos of the wilky way? I managed to get some shots of the meteors a month back. Thanks sean

Get an app like star walk so you know where it is at any given time! Depends on camera!
I use nikon fx

Not my best but that was 10 seconds at Iso 5000 on my d7000 crop sensor with 10.5mm fisheye lens on

Go somewhere dark with preferably no light pollution ( not always possible ) and get a quick, wide lens

I should probably have shot with longer with a lower ISO but hey ho. You'll need to take a little time in PP as there's plenty of detail in the RAW files

I've got a 17-50mm 2.8 sigma and a 35mm 1.8 Nikon. I used the sigma last time

A very useful link, Stewart. Thanks for posting it.

From my recent experience of trying for it, I can only say...

As wide as possible, as fast as possible, as dark as possible. I found that (on a 1.5x crop body) 18mm wasn't quite wide enough but f/2 was fast enough. 10mm was wide enough but f/4 wasn't fast enough. New Moon and looking South from the South of Crete was dark enough! Next time I try, I'll take an FF body, a 14mm f/2.8 prime and aim for a similar Moon phase at the same location.

The best I managed earlier this month can be seen HERE. OK for a first attempt but I know I can manage better with the right kit.
