Shooting stars and meteor shower tonight

Just read on news pages that there is going to to be loads of shooting stars tonight as a meteor is set to pass by, so hope the skys are clear round your way
 
Ha, can,t even see across the road here, too thick fog.. typical.
I think it,s the Orionids meteor shower.
 
Nice and clear up here in the north but expecting a sea haar :shake:

It's been happening for a couple of days now i sat out in the back yard last night at about 10:30pm and i am not kidding you i saw the biggest meteorite i have ever seen in my life, it was bright orange and you could see the detail in the trail and chunks breaking off the back of it, absolutely amazing.
 
Been sunny here all day... and now it's just clouded over... typical...!
 
I've got to drive over to Buxton from Oldham tonight so fingers crossed I'll get some opportunity for a clear sky.

No chance for us tonight - I'm pretty sure the local fireworks factory has caught fire. We have thick smoke, and massive explosions going on at the moment....
 
If the cloud breaks then it could be a good display, with up to 150 meteors an hour from just before midnight for a few hours.
 
I said to the wife I would take some nice pictures of that if I had a tripod (Which I have wrapped up for xmas). Still wouldn't let me have it!
 
If it stays clear I'll have a go at catching somE. The Perseids failed maybe I'll have more luck with the Geminids.
 
Hi guys,

Heard about this and would like to have a go at capturing some images but unsure of how to go about it so any advise would be very welcome please.

I have similar kit to John (jgs001) - a 450d, 18-55 and 55-250; am i going to be likely to do anything?

Tad luckier than Brooksy in that the tripod Santa is bringing isn't wrapped yet if that is needed!

Outlore - that wasn't in the Braintree area of Essex by any chance, was it? Could feel the explosions but couldn't see anything.

The sky has been pretty clear this evening and a fair few meteors with some good trails. Constant interruptions from Stansted make any decent photos difficult though :(

David and tinkie you want to use wide angle, 30 second exposures, continuous shooting, f small number, iso high, lock the shutter release remote and hope you've pointed the camera in the right place. I saw 20, And captured 2

i lack dedication it looked cold so i stayed indoors with pajamas

dunno why i get massively dedicated and climb on stupid things for some shots but cba to go outside for others :S

Thanks for the advice John. I was hoping to have a go tonight but it has been foggy all morning and is very cloudy now. Not even sure if they are meant to be visible tonight but will have a look.

Pleased that you captured a couple yourself.

Thanks Tracey... I've posted the results on my Astro blog. They aren't really of photographic interest, but from an Astronomy point of view it's good to catch them. They'll be about for a couple more nights... it was the peak last night, but you've got a day or two either way. The cold was a really so and so last night, but it goes with the territory with Astronomy.
 
I was all excited last night in the hope of catching some of this but I went outside at about 22:30 and not a star in the sky it was cloudy. so I went upstairs and cleaned the windows and set the tripod up just incase it cleared up but no. agghh well I will try again tonight and hopfully be lucky.
 
Good luck John...it's worth checking sat24.com... it shows the last 2 hours of satellite photos taken, and is a useful tool for working out whether it's worth a chance or not outside. I'm not sure you'll have enough of a FOV from inside the house to see them, they can go all over the sky. That's the frustrating thing with the Meteor showers... you (well I) never point the camera at the right place...
