I want to have a go at shooting a local team's soccer games. Not on commission I wouldn't even need a pass to shoot it, but I have a bit of a problem.

I don't own a DSLR. I shoot with a x90 Pentax bridge camera. At the longest end of the Lens the biggest aperture is f5.0. I am wondering if I should borrow my dads slr for the sports shots.

How big of a disadvantage do you think my camera is?

I started with a bridge camera thats 10 yrs old now.. the one in my avatar on the left there... that had 2.8 throughout.. not that I knew.. just shot everything in sports mode :)

As Mike says its the shutter lag and I had to learn whats termed "pre emptive photography" for example if theres a corner.. point at goalmouth and shoot before the ball gets there.. by the time the shutter has done its bit the ball will be in the shot..

its doable with a bridge camera on a nice sunny day with f5 .. but you will miss a lot of shots and keeper rate will be poor.. It can be done.. but if you ahve other options then go for those :)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you're going to struggle. The biggest problem with the bridge camera is not the f5 lens but the shutter lag. What can your dad lend you?

An old Pentax DSLR (probably not that old) but it take about ten seconds after I take the shot to even be able to look at it never mind continuous shooting. Maybe if he wasn't coming to shoot himself he would lend me his current DSLR. Lenses wouldn't be a problem.

Ok, that's a start. If you can post the model number maybe people on here can help with the specifics.
Don't worry too much about how quick the camera can shoot multiple pics, I started off winding film on with a lever ( anyone else remember them!!) then bought an auto winder that did 1 frame per second!
Shooting slowly makes you think more and you learn quicker than spraying off loads if shots.
Post specifics of what gear you can use and I'm sure you'll get some help.
If you must use your bridge camera, then why not try looking for alternate shots? There's always plenty going on off the ball which most people ignore - managers expressions, fans, players talking to the ref etc.
