I am looking for low budget techniques on how to shoot soft focus in camera for a dark fairytale themed shoot. For info I have use of 24-70, 50 and 105mm lenses but don't want to smear stuff on my filters! I may also use 2 off camera flash. The idea is to create a dark ethereal feel to the shots!

I have heard of using hosestockings as a "soft filter"... No personal experience with it though. Otherwise maybe some of that "clingfilm", not sure what the english term is for it, but that clear plastic film you use to cover up food.

My pleasure, please share the results, would love to see the effect :)

If you wanted to do it in PP, Tiffen Dfx2 has the best software-based softening filters IMO. There's at least a dozen different types and they can be stacked if needed.

I believe there's a free trial version on the Tiffen website.
