Hi everyone, I'm new here so first a big hello to you all.

I run a small graphic design business producing print work for the creative and lifestyle industries, most of which includes identity and printed materials for photographers & artists, luxury product packaging and books...etc

I'm in the process of building a new setup to photograph my work, currently using a 400D but just about to upgrade to a 5DMkii.

Could anyone recommend a good lighting setup for this kind of photography (see image below as an example of what I wish to achieve). I'm currently looking at some Smoke Grey Camulet background paper but am struggling with the lighting (strobe/constant and also lighting positioning) as I don't normally handle product photography.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
All the best, Brett :D

This is a very easy subject, the lighting doesn't need to be creative and all that's needed is two light sources and large diffusers (to create soft but not totally flat lighting).

You might also want a wall boom, this one from Photomart is probably ideal. This will allow you to place a softbox overhead and to angle it exactly as required. Then you need a good quality but reasonably priced 2 head kit like the Lencarta SmartFlash and although you won't need the umbrellas included in the kit, it's actually cheaper to buy the kit for just £250 than you buy the items individually, and 2 large softboxes like these.

You might also consider a grey vinyl background instead of paper. Cheaper in the long run, wipes clean after use and can produce a subtle reflection, which adds to the interest.

Thanks Garry, thats the kind of answer I was hoping for. David - I haven't got any lights yet which is why I started the post but when I do take some i'll post them in my gallery. I'll have a look at the vinyl as well but really wanted to try and avoid a shine/reflection.

Can I just say after starting another post earlier and then considering leaving the forum because of the very unhelpful comments I received I'm now glad i didn't leave. Thanks again, Brett :-)

work out a budget than talk to gary he knows much, and is the tech guy for lencarta so can source you stuff too

Hi everyone, thanks again. That's great, as a startup I was looking to spend around £300-400 on lights and then upgrade should I need better equipment later on down the line. I recently bought myself a Slik Pro 400DX tripod which is pretty sturdy (and not bad on 1/2 price offer) and I already have a boom arm which I've modified from my drum kit hardware so it's super-strong and will do for basic office use even if its a bit odd looking.

If I could squeeze a couple of lights with diffusers into the budget (probably just a decent started pack) that would be great, after all it's only to take a few photo's of the work now and again as we work with a small group of photographers for fashion, interior work already and they have their own equip...it just makes sense to be self-sufficient on this one.
