Ive been asked by a good friend to shoot her daughters 15th Birthday Party, there will be around 12-14 girls of the same age present, they all want portrait shots with different outfits which im fairly happy with, the problem I have is that they have said they want some group shots, just looking for a bit of advice on how best to light for group shots, im sort of out of my comfort zone if there are any more than a couple of people in the shot, I have at my disposal 2 x 200w Lencarta Smartflash Heads, with 120cm Octabox, 100cm shoot through umbrella X 2, I have numerous speedlights with stands and smaller 24in softboxes, just looking for advice on shooting groups/lighting/poses

Do it outside - If shooting inside it will just be a big tight squeeze I guess.

suppose its weather dependent, no problem with space as they have a very large lounge (read huge) where I will be setting up for the indoor portraits

Tnx Brad, already been considering this, its more the lighting thats concerning me having never actually had to light such a large group, im fine with one or two, off to do some research on lighting groups

If you are just shooting in an average lounge with no studio backdrop, you could just bounce a speedlight off the ceiling - Won't be absolutely perfect but should look fine and it's quick and easy.

If doing it inside it might be best to bounce the light off the walls for the larger groups shots. You could get them all lying in a circle with heads in the middle and just light their faces and shoot from above..

yes the wall behind would be a good option to get some even light on the group too.

Try something like this?
