Looks like I'll be covering the finish at this year's Great North Run - first running even for me so a few questions in general and more specific to anyone who has shot this particular event before.

- I was already planning on going up as my wife is running it so when asked to cover it I wasn't keen on taking a load of kit. Considering 2x1DX paired with a 24-105, and a 70-200 (+ 1.4 and 2x extenders if needed flash etc .. ) Assuming when covering the finish line longer (i.e. 400mm) isn't really needed (although I realise at a push with the 70-200 + 2x I have 400mm ..
- assume I would pick up the necessary accreditation the day before somewhere?
- having watched the race from the finish line last year looks like the photographers are huddled on a platform ... bit of a bun fight for the main runners coming in ...

Any other tips much appreciated :)

cheers,

Nigel

PS: Great North was my first serious run 4 years ago ... still remember getting to mile 12 only to be presented with a beer by a semi naked (rather large) Geordie lad ... it was so nice I went back for seconds .. and sine then I've made sure to consume a beer on each and every event I do ... even the 70 mile ultras ... it would seem strange not to now :)

who you working for? i'm at gnr as well

I'll be working for my agency .. Action Plus Sports ... as I said I had not planned to cover it but was going to be watching. I'm hoping the 70-200 / 24-105 combo will be enough ... I can see where 300mm or even 400mm may be useful for catching any action on the final straight etc but for crossing the finish line and poses post race I think the above combo should be enough .... Never done it before so not sure as yet to the process of accreditation and what not .... my buddy lives 100 yards from the finish line so hopefully handy from a logistics point of view ... Perhaps see you there ..

What's the take up for these agencies photos of people crossing the line? I've had photos taken of me when I've run and only once asked for the neg. At £10 a time, it's not something I'd want on a regular basis.
Did they approach YOU to take photos or was it the other way round?

i'm working for marathon photos should be round the finish area tiring weekend but great fun

I was there not as a pro. I normally look for the fun runners or something it unusual but here a couple of mine
