Shooting from the Shard.

As title, visiting the Shard tomorrow and hope to take a few shots from the viewing gallery.

I'm assuming I'll be shooting wide but will my Tokina 11-16 DX on a cropper be too extreme?

Would like to travel light so don't want to drag along lenses I wont use.

Grateful for any advice.

I absolutely love this image from the Shard and it was shot using the 14-24 so your 11-16 on a crop sensor should get a decent shot of the skyline.
 
Wow. See what you mean. I'll be there by day unfortunately

I think I will take the 11-16 and perhaps the 16-85 for wandering around with and leave the heavy weight stuff at home.

That's a great photo above.

I went last weekend, way too busy up there to get anything good though. The glass was dirty, and there are pillars in the way of any decent shot.

was a real disappointment compared to empire state and top of the Rock.

I took my 17-55 2.8 and was Detling loads of reflection off the windows as it was really sunny

This really bugged me when we went, the schoolkids crawl 'through' the crowd then stand up right in front of you... I'm not ashamed to say I developed heavy immovable legs on our visit! lol
Needless to say, reflections are always an issue I struggle with this too. I was actually up there for a 'sunset' view, but I could not for the life of me push my way to the east of the deck to see it properly :(
I took this one which I think was one of my better ones from the visit (with my 18-135).

i actually prefer the view from One new Change ( much lower of course but FREE) and great shots of St Pauls Dome.
also the Sky Garden from the Walkie Talkie Building ( 20 Fenchurch Street ) has free visits for shooting and always worth looking out for.

also to consider. level 6 of the TATE modern ( free )
Paramount Bar at Centre Point ( free but you need to buy a drink )
Monument tower ( a bit of a climb but worth it for £3 )
OXO tower 8th floor ( free )
Tower Bridge glass walkway ( i think £8 )
as much as i would love to go up the shard i cant justify spending £25 for a hit and miss view due to time limits/ weather/ time of day ).
 
The view from the Monument is interesting, as is its spiral staircase, but the safety mesh at the top makes it very difficult to photograph through with a DSLR. The smaller lens of a compact camera easily pokes through.

must have changed things since i was last up it as though they had mesh it was of a larger kind and i could poke my lens through with no problems. that looks rather new in that shot from when i was up there a few years back.
 
I found 50mm on ff plenty wide enough from top of the Shard. I was fortunate enough to go up with some lovely evening light and a practically empty deck. Just not had any time to process my shots!
 
Well I went and did it and all I can say is
"what a massive dissapointment". Reflections, dirty glass and a very grey city scape.

Best shot I got was of the illuminated lift ceiling on the way down.

I quite like the reflections as they give the feeling of being in a high building rather than just "another" aerial view of london that could have been taken using a drone

How times have changed....darned sure I recall climbing the Monument back around early 1970's and all there was was a simple barrier, none of the suicide prevention netting seen now and even the railings look so new compared to then.

Same story when I went up Walkie Talkie to The Sky Garden, dirty glass, massive amount of reflections, and mega hazy views as sun went down. Took about 30 shots but only one salvageable was this.
