Shooting for free, a situation.....

Following DanielJays thread on shooting for motorsport I noticed a lot of comments that got me thinking.

Recently I have agreed with a small race team to go along to one of their events and shoot a number of paddock shots of them working on the car, amongst other shots.

I have offered to cover the event for them for free, well, in return for free access to the circuit and the understanding of 1 or 2 of my photos appearing in a new magazine article the team will be writing (which they will not pay me for). I have agreed that if they want anything further they will pay (ie. recurring magazine use, prints, web use etc.).

What do fellow board members think to this?

Bearing in mind I have never had a photo published, do you think I am undervaluing my work by offering services on this occassion for free or, as I was thinking, a foot on the ladder as it were......

Comments appreciated.....

Andrew

it really depends what you want to do with your photography. if you want to keep appearing in mags and to be hired. then i think the bigger portfolio of published work will benefit you. however if its jsut a one off then you might get something else from it aprt from access.

The experience will be much more valuable and there's no pressure on you to come up with the goods, you've made a good decision.

Is it worth them supplying the article to the magazine and then telling the magazine they've employed a photographer and you could get images from him.

You should be able to discuss terms with the magazine then. I do this with a number of magazines and its worked for me.

Thanks for the replies. I half wondered whether I'd made a rash decision but I'm glad a few others feel I was probably right.

Andrew, good point on contacting the magazine, I will ask the question to my contact.....

I don't think the magazine in question has a HUGE circulation, but my feeling was that having a copy of any published work would be a bonus and probably worth more in the future than cash anyway.....
