So I was just checking some prices on a Norwegian photo side and was going to compare 70-200 prices. The Nikon VRII is priced about $2850 which is fair, but then I saw the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di SP VC USD which is priced at a ridiculous $2690.. How can the price difference between these two only be around $150, it makes my brain go "wtf was tamron thinking". I mean, the tamron is a good lens but the nikon one is surely much much better. And everyone with a bit of brain would pay an extra $150 for the Nikon. :bang:

For comparison, in USA (B&H photo), the Nikon cost $2390 and the Tamron costs $1499. Thats almost $900 dollars difference. It would actually be $600 cheaper for my to buy the tamron in the states and pay for both VAT, customs and shipping.

And this silly norwegian price is not only in that one shop, it seems like it's the same all over. :bonk:

The Tamron 70-200 VC has only been on sale for five minutes. Not all retailers even have stock yet. It will settle down.

I wasnt aware it had been released. Any reviews yet? I think ill do a search.

Look at Sigmas launch prices, the 3rd partys like to think they can price their lenses high, in reality though after a couple months with no sales the prices drop massively.

The tamron is brand spanking new. The Nikon VR II has been around a couple of years now (not long for a lens, but still a while)

Perhaps comparing the launch RRP of each lens would be a fairer comparison.

The outcome will be the same though. The Nikon will be better. The tamron will be cheaper.

Edit: Oh and you really want to see overpriced, just look at Canon's latest lens releases.....

So, what's the problem? Buy it from B & H and save $600 USD.

Shipping fees, customs . . . Bye, bye $600

The OP did say 'For comparison, in USA (B&H photo), the Nikon cost $2390 and the Tamron costs $1499. Thats almost $900 dollars difference. It would actually be $600 cheaper for my to buy the tamron in the states and pay for both VAT, customs and shipping'

I took this to mean a gross saving of $900 USD, and $600 USD after paying VAT, customs and shipping?

I think OP was being optimistic with that. For a start, customs would be at least 22% of the items original value - in this case that would be over $300 before you even consider postage & packing, which would be hefty, I imagine, because of the weight and distance. He may still save in the end, but it won't be anything like $600, plus he should factor in all the risks of long distance deliveries. Damage, packages going missing etc ..

Better to just hold out, that lens will not stay at that price for long.

I'm not interested in buying the tamron anyways. I just don't like their pricing strategy. No one with a brain will buy this over the $150 more expensive Nikon. The difference in USA is already huge between these lenses, but in Norway it's not. Strange.

Was that in Japanfoto? Out of interest are there actually any decent camera shops in Norway/ Oslo? (Jeg er student i Oslo...)

No it was actually in FotoVideo, but the prices are mostly the same all over.
Well, I know that Japanphoto has opened a "megastore" in bogstadveien, and Japanphoto is ok.
But if you live in Oslo though, there is only one camera shop for you! FotoVideo is an excellent shop, the staff have lots of kownledge and service is good. They also have most of their stuff on display so that everyone can try lenses and stuff without having to ask the staff. :)

It's very close to Karl Johan, so it's very central. :)
