Just got my 400D a week ago and reading on here it would seem the kit lens is pants, its ok to start with but an upgrade is necessary, so of I go to the camera shop to ask about buying a second hand walkabout lens, one that is a little better quality. £250 quoted:cuckoo:. Would I be asking to much to get a better quality lens, second hand, in the region of £100.:help:

Your kit lens is not "the pants"....really, it's not that bad and some very good shots have been taken with it. If somebody can't get a half decent shot with the 18-55 then it's the fault of the person.
I'm not saying that it's the bees knees either but your not going to see much improvement spending a hundred quid.
Take some shots with it and post them...see whether it's you or the lens that needs to be upgraded a little.

Take your time and don't worry about street cred just yet.

This old chestnut again. As Bob says, the kit lens is absolutely fine for starting out, and for significantly beyond that too when in good hands, especially if stopped down to f/8 or so. I know it's really tempting when the weather's bad and we're in the depths of winter - but don't worry about buying more kit just after you've got your first DSLR! What's your shutter count so far? If it's less than a few hundred, how do you have an idea as to whether you need a different lens?

Just take stacks and stacks of pictures.
 
I've seen some great shots published in photography magazine taken with that lens (well canon's EOS magazine). If your really pedantic and pixel peep, you may notice some colour fringing between light and dark areas, and maybe some distortion at the edges, when on the widest angle. But as mentioned, if your stopped down to f8 - f11, which you probably would be on a landscape shot, you wont notice the edges and vignetting.

My advise, don't worry about it.

Check out this link. It compares the closest L series lens. While there are differences, I think you'll agree, your lens stands up quite well.

Point taken, I know it is good for some good basic shots, as I have taken a few:clap: and they turned out quite well, I am just looking to see what is available and for how much. When I figure out how to post:bonk: I will put a couple up and see how peeps react. Thanks for your replies :thumbs:
 
When I first bought my 400D, I bought it with a "cheap" lens, and then picked up another on ebay, used both of these to play with the focal lengths and get a feel for the camera, now have sold both on ebay (made a loss of £10) and have upgraded, but have a good feel for the camera and what lenghts I like to shoot. Only have one, well ok maybe 2 lenses to save up for, but if I had gone straight out I probably would have bought the wrong one for me.

I did get some pretty good shots from the kit lens, and some pretty aweful ones, its a learning curve, use it and enjoy it.
