I've been planning on buying a PC for some time now as the (work) laptop just can't handle the larger files generated by the D200. I was planning to buy from the Dell Outlet online shop so I thought I'd go into PC World yesterday just to compare prices and boy am I glad I did!

For starters the sales guy was articulate, intelligent and listened to my requirements, I had a fair idea of what I wanted so I pointed out a few machines, only one of which suited my needs. He dissuaded me from the more expensive ones stating that they were too much for what I required giving me clear lucid answers to my questions without resorting to tech-speak. The one I did like didn't have enough RAM but he explained how easy it would be to upgrade, which I knew anyway but he could easily have steered my down the path of a more expensive unit. The upshot of this was that I bought a Compaq Presario, 160gb hard drive, dual processor, 2gb of memory, DVD writer, wireless card, wireless keyboard and mouse and Norton Security all for £440, £37 cheaper than the basic machine from Dell without the extras.

I've never been that impressed with the customer service in PC World but this guy restored my faith. Well done.

And you say this was PC World you went into?

are you sure?

You might have found the only PC World employee that actually knows what they are talking about.

WoW!

Whenever I go in there I try and avoid eye contact and hope they don't try to talk to me because I always end up embarrassing them by knowing more about their products than they do :/

PC World here in Inverness are good for peripherals but a bit lacking in the tech department. Well done on getting that price. sounds good.

I am speccing a PC with my local computer shop at the moment as my home PC is starting to show it's age. Thinking of getting a machine which will be photos only.

This was for editing, mail and surfing, I was very specific about my requirements as I didn't want to pay for a high end gaming machine. As I was only buying the tower that was just over £300 before I added anything else which is excellent value.

Its a good price and a compaq isn't bad at all.

You could have probably done it a little cheaper if you'd built it yourself and I personally wouldn't recommend norton internet security (horrible piece of software) but you've not done bad there at all.

Shocking indeed  :bonk:

I normally hate going into PC World, because it really has gone downhill.
I think you should write in and commend the guy, maybe if enough people do that, when they get good and honest service (rather than sales pitches), they might sit up and take note, that its what the customer wants and will bring them more business.

I took a friend of mine to buy a laptop the other week. Normally I hate PC World with a passion, but he wanted PC World, and wanted the security and stability of a large chain, local store, physical presence etc etc, so we went along and chose a good laptop, for what was quite a good price.
We walked in, credit card in hand, and the sales guy was so disinterested it was untrue. He tried the usual "Baffle with bull****" until Id had enough and started coming back with key phrases to make sure he knew I knew what I was talking about.

Then when we were sure which laptop to go for, it wasn't actually on display, (chose on the website), we wanted to look at one first...he said no. He couldnt open one up as he would have to sell it discounted if we decided against it.

I should have said (but didn't), so you want us to give you £700 for something, that we're not allowed to see first? Are you mad?
We then mentioned an offer on the website where they offered a laptop bag halfprice with any laptop (£15 instead of £30), we asked him about it and he wandered off looking for it, came back and said "I can't find that one but I can let you have this one for 25 (a worse one)..."

I said "oh you mean you cant find that one there "pointing to it on the shelf".

The guy was a complete numpty who we had to basically chase to make a sale.

We then asked him if he had a certain router in stock the DSL-604T (or the DSL-904T which is the same but with a dongle added).
He actually said "Ah, I can't search for that on the system, as it would bring up too many results".

I've never wanted to punch a PC World employee before, I always usually pity them as theyre usually only doing their job, but this guy I had a massive urge to jump on him and stretch his already oversized pug ears and shove them in his mouth, while beating him about the head with his laptop box that we weren't allowed to see inside.

And to top it all off he sold us a duff router that had been returned and put on the "its only been opened, honest" shelf.

I assume those key phrases were:

"Shutup!"
"You have no idea what you're talking about!"

and finally,

"Oh just f**k off!"

:)

crikey, not bad!
I build all my own machines... Wouldn't even consider PC World, but mebbe they aren't as bad as I thought:geek:

PC Worlds pricing policy has improved no end in the last 12 months ! they used to be one of the most expensive places to buy from !

Baiting PC world employees is a pasttime thats immense fun sometimes ! ;)

im speechless...again

PC world, brilliant, simple clear advice :naughty: ...I was on the phone to them a few months ago....

'Hello, you told my friend that she could defiantly uninstall the AOL software on the new PC she bought Today...could you explain how to do this please?'

'Yes Sir, just right click on the small icon and then click delete.'
