I received a couple of samples from www.cabp.co.uk in order to see what sheeting would work best as a shiny floor for my white seamless stuff.

The first sample is clear acrylic, the second white (actually cream) acrylic.

The result is:

The clear sheet is on the left and the speckles are some dust on the underside. You can also notice two reflections one from the bottom and one from the top surface.

The white sheet gives a softer reflection.

Cost - clear: 3mm 1220x1220 = £20.82 = £13.98 per square meter
Cost - clear: 2mm 1220x1220 = £13.88 = £9.32 per square meter
white: 3mm 1520x1020 = £33.35 = £21.50 per square meter

Any opinions as to which would work better ? I am leaning towards the white....
 
Try putting some white paper under the clear one and see how that works.

or black too
 
Hi Hodders, I took some pics using the hilite & clear acrylic sheet that I bought from Wickes placed over my vinyl train the other day - I'll post them up - but it worked almost too well as I had to increase the exposure of the shadow in PS afterwards as it looked too much. I'm at work at the moment, i'll see if I can get the images off my phone and up here somehow... if not I'll post later.

There's quite a bit of PS done - I've been backing off the hilite lights to keep any spill to a minimum which means the contrast remains nice and punchy - but it does add to the processing at the end.
 
There was white under the clear sheet. I also found that the angle made a big difference to the level of reflection.

With black it looks like this:

So the clear does add flexibility as long as the second reflection is not too much. Given that in normal use you would be looking at a subject several feet away, I'm guessing that the second reflection would be unnoticeable.

I might well pick up a sheet from Wickes to get a feel for it. I've got some more hours booked in the village hall on Friday so will try it out then.

I would be really curious to see the un-PPd version w.r.t. what the shadows looked like. Can you post it ?
 
I'd go with clear for the options it gives you.... I'm guessing I could reduce the reflection somewhat by adding a reflector on camera right to bounce a bit back and this may save me adjusting it later in PS ... but so far I'm quite please with it.

Edit: Yeah happy to post the un-PP'd versions, subject exposure remains the same but the background is about right behind subject but the floor is very grey and requires quite a bit of dodge tool to get right. I've not got the original available now but will post later when I get home.
 
Shadows on my image above were increased about half a stop over the original image just to make it slightly less distracting from the subject.
 
Yes I'm enjoying the challenge - although I'd love to have more space and more money to chuck at it.. but then that's always the way I guess!
 
Space is a big thing. I've got a couple of builders coming tonight to quote for a garage conversion. The garage I have is about 3.2m wide by about 8m long (although narrowing after about 5m to about 2m wide). But it has good height and should be ideal once converted.

I guess an extra stop on the flooring would achieve the same effect as me PP'ing it and making it lighter, but i'm not sure i've got enough lighting kit to achieve that and I don't want to overdo the lights in the hilite as the spill from it is bad enough as it is.

Edit: Looking at it I could also probably do with lowering my flashes in the hilite as they're about half way up at the moment, this might help a bit. Alternatively drop down my aperture a bit maybe 2/3rds of a stop would blow the back out a bit more. At the time of taking it I upped the aperture from f8 to f9 (obviously adjusting my key to compensate) as I was getting blinkies on the background around the subjects and was worried about how much spill it was creating.
 
Hi I purchased 2 sheets (one white, one black) of perspex from S-I-M 500mm x 1500mm for £32 delivered, they do a vast array of sizes and a cutting service.

I am very happy with the results

I was looking for pure white but reflections are possible.

Look out for the black, you will be clearing dust off it for ever ...
