Hi all

Just been into London to the Natural History Museum to see the exhibition for the above competition. A very high standard of entries as usual! Even the comps for younger photographers had some amazing shots that many adult photographers (such as msot of us!) can only aspire to!

Some of the images are on the website, but they really dont work very well as such a small size.

Interestingly a significant no. (maybe 35%?) of the shots were taken with a Nikon D70/D70s. Other popular cameras were the Nikon D2x and the Canon 1-series. There were a couple of 20Ds and one D200. Other manufacturers barely got a look in! Almost no film SLRs (unlike last year when there were a no. of Nikon F5s and similar) and only a couple of medium format film cameras. DSLRs are certainly taking over!

Anyway, I heartily recommend that you go, even if wildlife isnt usually your "thing". :)

Hi Joe ... coinkidinkilly we are going on the morrow ... so cheers for the good comments and the linky ...

Is it worth taking gear down do you think Joe ...

Rog...:p

Sounds good. I shall have to drop by if I go to London.

The equipment available to some of the youngsters is amazing! 300mm 2.8, how very nice indeed :)

That snake shot capturing the frog is a well deserved winner imo.

Ed :)

Im not so sure. Yes, it is a great capture but there are a few niggles that I have:

1. Its hard to see the snakes head unless you are looking at a large version of the image. Otherwsie, it just looks like a frong in mid-air (possible mid-jump?)

2. You cannot actually "see" the snake holding the frog

3. The frog is still "grinning" - even though he is in the jaws of the snake (yes, I know frogs cant make expressions, but if you look at the pic hopefully you will see what I mean!).

my 2p anyway! :)

I think its the intensity of the capture, especially from the photographer of that age. Imagine what kind of photography they'll be producing in years to come? Amazing! :)

Some quality stuff in there!

Can I just ask what parents give their children under 10 a Nikon D2x??? The pics are great and everything but a child under ten!

Paid a visit today ... shame about the queues to enter the NHM ... and then another to buy the tickets for the WPotY ...

ADVICE ... either buy your tickets on-line afore you go (using Joe's linky) OR ... go straight through to the exhibition hall and buy your tickets there rather than from the Exhibition ticket desk at the entrance ... hardly any queues then ... DoH ... ;)

AND ... Don't go for a walk down Knightsbridge way afterwards ... when Harrods have their bloody sale on ...

Very good to see all the exhibits though and at a decent size ... :D

Not sure how the judges select the winners though ... for me there are better shots than the ones they have selected ... but what do I know ...

Definitely worth going ...

:p
