Hi,

Looking at getting back into medium format and would love to know what the bee's knees film is for landscapes - never really used proper film only the tatty out of date stuff that my college shop used to sell - which was mostly black & white!

Preferably quite cheap film though - around the £3 per roll mark if possible.

Thanks,
Jack

Out of interest what camera are you using Jack ? I doubt id ever be able to afford more than a holga to be honest!

Not used it myself but Kodak Ektar seems to be getting rave reviews,

Nothing special, just a Lubitel 166+, but I figure that better quality film = better quality photos.

Highlighted the words "quality" so as not to be picked on for assuming that better gear = better pictures. ;)

I'm growing rather fond of Fuji Acros 100 at the moment... but if you're after colour landscapes then for my money it's Velvia 50 all the way - not cheap though...

The Velvia is tempting - not too far off what I was hoping to be paying either.

Ive used it on 35mm and its very sharp and has very little grain, its going to be even less grainy on MF.

Thanks, I know your a student so was just curious as to what gear you used for MF.

Gingerjon has proved that you can get surprisingly sharp shots from a Lubitel.

My college has a single lens Mamiya MF with a top viewfinder, its absolutely mint - F/2.8 lens on it, as soon as I picked it up and looked down through the viewfinder I was in love - I seriously considered stealing it and moving away.:nuts:

Haha! Well done with the restraint! , I'm sure my sister said the college has one TLR, not started yet though so will see what they've got in September.

You can get a real high quality Zeiss folder MF for around 20 quids. Got to be a class apart from the Lubitels...

And in the 35mm world, 20 quids is a lot of money for a real high quality camera....

ive seen a few zeiss folders on Ebay, but i was concerned about the quality of some of the older lenses. Im not sure what's a good buy!

Its a great lens... Many of them have Tessar; one of the best lens ever designed; and a design which was used right upto the late 70's in most RF lens of the Japanese cameras.

The only issue is that they are uncoated or single coated - but that just gives you less contrast, and flare if you point to sun. A bigger worry is (1) whether the shutter works and (2) are there leaks in the bellow.

Leaking bellow is easy to fix ( a black tape), but a shutter is a difficult fix. I had one, and it produced perfectly good result

You can get Velvia 50 120 for £3.40 from 7 day shop:

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_1&products_id=102984

Currently their stock is 'plenty' so its safe to order without having to wait ages for them to deliver. If however it ever says 'on order' don't bother as it could be weeks or even in some cases months before you get it.

Ektar is also available for £3.29

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_1&products_id=106428

Its a bit more expensive at £4.39, but you might want to try KodaK E100VS slide film, its like Velvia 50 just a bit less saturated.
