Sharp Japan has announced a new 1/2.5" CCD, now packing a frankly shocking eight million pixels into an area measuring just 5.8 x 4.3 mm it has a pixel pitch of just 1.75 um which Sharp are proud to announce is the smallest in its class. Is this a good thing? I think probably not, as we will see manufacturers cramming this sensor into existing designs with average quality lenses and then claiming to deliver high sensitivities such as ISO 1600. Progress marches on, at least the marketing department will be happy.

Squeezing more pixels into a smaller area is not a great thing especiallyfor higher ISO performance.

Makes for a larger DOF apperently

What is 1/2.5" meant to be?

Well is it one quarter or 1 divided by 2.5 which would be 0.4" and if it is why couldn't they just say so except 0.4" is more than 5.8mm so it can't be. Is the mixture of imperial and metric measurements meant to confuse?

Larger dof is not a good thing either. All your images will come out with every part of the image sharp (same as most digital cameras just now).

We want to be able to control dof and only by using larger sensors and fast lenses can you achieve this to any degree.

Also means you can have that f1.4 and still have some part of you image in focus ;)

I'd guess this sensor will not be dor dSLRs though!

Yes it is a mix of metric and imperial. It is 1 divided 2.5 inches, i.e. as you say 0.4 inches in diameter.
