Sharp Budget telephoto lens for D90?

Well come christmas time i will be looking at investing into a telephoto/zoom lens.

Now i have the kit 18-105mm, so ideally want to waste as little of this as possible (so what, 70mm+ as a starting range?)

I also wonder if its possible to get one with a macro function? or is that asking the impossible? I notice a lot of these lenses have minimum focus distance of 1.5m or so. If not, i could invest in some extension tubes or something (this has been delt with in another thread)

Budget is around £400 max really. Any suggestions?

You should be able to get the 70-300 VR AF-S for just less than 400 notes, i have one and im pretty happy with it, its not a macro lens though.

Nikon 70 - 300 VR go for about £300 used or about £440 new.

As has already been said the 70-300 AF-S VR is a fanttastic lens and punches well above it's price tag .

I had a good look around before I bought mine and it seems that a lot of people buy the sigma/ tamron version and end up upgrading for the Nikon so best save the money and get the Nikon in the first place.
