Took the plunge this week and ordered a set of 2x Shanny SN910EX-RF speedlites and a SN910TX to control them with for my D500.

The problem is, I just can't seem to get them to communicate!

All seems good with the flashguns themselves, eveything seems to communicate well, both function and fire as either master or slave and if only the speedlites were involved then I would rate them very highly from a technical point of view.

When the TX module is introduced, they very rarely link, when they do, they disconnect very quickly and the speedlites have NEVER been triggered when pressing the shutter.

It does seem as if the unit is just plain faulty, the question is, am I doing anything wrong / is there anything simple that I've missed that I can check before I contact the seller?

Any help appreciated!

Have you tried it outside the house? I have a couple of gadgets (wireless video sender and electricity monitoring system) that cause other 2.4GHz items to miscommunicate.

Hi Bob

Haven't tried them outdoors yet but did try changing the channels unsuccessfully. Will give it a go later in the week, thanks for the idea!

Update:

Tried outdoors, no change.

Exchanged SN910TX unit, no change.

Conclusion, unreliable, send back for refund!

The history here is that Yongnuo have been enormously successful at producing very cheap flashguns, sold by ebay sellers in very high quantities. This was so successful that they contracted out manufacture to a number of other factories, but it worked too well, they completely saturated the market and as a result the supply of customers dried up.

Therefore there are a lot of factories that ran out of orders, so some of those factories started producing their own branded versions, often cheapening the manufacturing process even further, and have been selling them pretty much at cost just to keep their factories going. I think that sending them back for refund is a good decision:)
