Yes
Just wondering, how would one go about creating shafts of light using artificial lighting in a photograph?

You can use standard spotlights (that have a concentrated beam), but you'll need to leave the shutter open for longer.

Rather than using smoke I suggest a haze machine which isn't as dense as a smoke machine but has the desired effect (if you don't overdo it).

I could be wrong, but i would assume you need spotlights of some description, maybe something like this?

And maybe even put a little bit of smoke in the air if you are going after that particular look.
Yes, that will do it. Not perfect for this job because it doesn't have adjustable shutters, but it will work simply by making up a simple gobo and sticking it in.

Again, it will need to be capable of being focussed and will need to either take gobos or to have adjustable shutters.

A more Heath Robinson but perfectly effective method is simply to make up a gobo from blackwrap (Cinefoil). Place it close to the subject with the light distance for a hard edged effect, do the opposite for the opposite effect.

If you don't wanna buy a hazer, maplin do spray smoke that's pretty good indoors :)
