Am a studio novice who has borrowed some equipment. I was all fired up to play and learn but getting shadows on every photo. What am I doing wrong and how can I sort it.

Yes, unfortunately without a photo it will be hard for any of us to offer some advice.

If you don't have any to hand can you describe where the shadows are that you want rid of?

I find when showing people lighting the most common mistake in regards to shadows that people make is not having the lights high enough. This results in shadows on the backdrop or the back of the scene. Is this what you are talking about? If so, try raising your lights and pointing them down rather than straight ahead and low.
