Hi all,

One area of photography of which I currently know next to nothing about is flash photography. This is probably because I hate the onboard flash on my camera, and havent yet stumped up the case for a 430EX II.

However, I would love for someone to explain in layman terms, how one would go about achieving something like this...

Here

Cheers.

EDIT: Hang on, I know the image isn't showing... I apologise, for some reason, flickr won't let me hotlink this, perhaps its image rights or something...

Looks like a single flash was used with a grid attached which creates a light in a circular shape with feathered edge.

Something like this.

I used a 430 EX II off camera with a home made grid for the effect. I moved away from my background to turn it blac but if the flash and subject are closer to the background some light can be made to hit it and turn it grey.

Or use natural light or another flash for the background. Looks like it is window light for the back ground then exposed the face with a flash!!

What king of aperture, ISO, shutter speed would I be going for. I have a 430ex II in the post, so I'm keen to experiment.

Look at where the shadows are falling. I would guess the flash is to the side and to the back of the subject. It may also have some diffusion over the flash head
