Severe lowering of suspension?

I know little about modding cars but this looks severe to me.

The wheel was literally millimetres off the wing!! it just looked impossible to turn the front wheels........unless it has some mod that raises the suspension prior to driving off:shrug:

Looks stupid. God job you got motion blur on the pedestrians, because on those cobbles, you are not going to get it on the car
 
Lower than my race car and I have problems with ground clearance on that. I've put lowered springs on a number of my road cars and competition cars (and much higher springs on a couple of the Imps as well), but no interest in going that low on something that will be used on the road. Doubt even my low entry jack will go under it.
 
:thinking: I can remember back 25+yrs ago where it was a case of how HIGH you could get the rear of the car an show off that nice chromed rear axle with the red lights - and of course the huge side exhausts :lol:
 
Damn, that is lower than a snake's wedding tackle. Surely that must make for a rather uncomfortable ride when using country lanes.
Further proof that there are still people who has more money than sense despiting these difficult financial times. :suspect:

the same could be said of someone dropping £3000 on a 5dmk2 and 70-200. a set of coilovers will set you back a fraction of that.. ;)

one persons hobby isnt going to appeal to everyone.
 
Talking of taste, the first time I spotted this car about 6 months ago it had blue Merc wheels on only recently has had black wheels fitted

actually there are some very good modified insurers out there these days offering good deals so there should be no reason why "they" shouldnt.

all of my mods including the remap are declared.

anyone that doesnt however is an idiot as it will void any policy.

That is absolutely true.

However, you could make a profit selling photos you have taken with that 5dmk2 and 70-200. That wheel mod, in my eyes, just comes across as a frivolous waste of hard earnt cash and offers no returns, it also suggests the driver is trying to make up for something he lacks in.

But then again, I am a bit tight fisted. :D
 
you can make money out of modified cars too if you do it to a competition level :D

but now we're getting pedantic :lol:

(not sure im liking the comment suggesting mods making up for small.. limbs though)

I once bought a BMW second hand that had lowered suspension and ultra-wide wheels with spray on tyres.
It wouldn't go over most speedhumps and the (very expensive) tyres punctured at the drop of a hat and could never be repaired...

I sold the wheels for A LOT of money on Fleabay, and after that the car was fine.

I must be missing something - but why do people spend money to make the car less drivable?

its subjective though, if you live a mile or two from work and there isnt any issues with the road then why not.. i run coilovers but am only 40mm or so lower than standard due to the distance i have to drive and the speedbumps around my home but if it was more convinient id like to run it lower. i also run 8" wide rubber and dont have any problems (other than price lol).

its also down to the way you drive, someone running that drop and rubber wont be blatting it around the streets in case they do hit a bump or pothole. like i said earlier its for look not performance.

its just a style thing, why do people buy expensive clothes/cameras/electrical goods etc etc.

You could have run that low with just lowered springs so why the expense of coilovers if you can't use them to their full effect. That certainly seems a pointless waste of money.

I don't mind looking at the odd really low car but wouldn't do it myself. I must me the only person to run coilovers at around the standard ride height (maybe a touch lower) :lol:

because the dampers and springs on mine were borderline shagged. and coilovers are a million times better than stock dampers and lowering springs. plus theyre adjustable if i ever move closer to work and on smoother roads.

the best way to get the handling spot on for a mk4 ibiza is coils, stiffer rear ARB and upgraded front lower arm bushes. and it does, the standard setup has a lot of understeer which is now corrected.

anyway, you can get a good set of coilovers for about £500 so its not exactly breaking the bank.

On coilovers. Never had any "major" issues with the lowness. Got stuck on a speed hump ones (one of them shallow long type ones) with my subframe resting on it but with a bit of help from a passer by I was free. If anything it makes you a more aware driver because your constantly looking whats ahead and planning your next move.

Air ride is pretty cool and seems to be taking over the VW Scene. However people are putting it on certain cars that spoil them in my oppinion. This year there are a few Audi RS4's on air ride. There is an age old argument that a good air suspension system is better than a standard factory setup. This might be the case for your bog standard Passat, A4, BMW etc etc but putting it on an RS4 where millions and millions of pounds has been put into develop suspension that's designed to be for the road and track on that level of performance car is a load of crap. People that think air suspension fitted to a car of that caliber and think its better have never driven the original car hard enough.

But the only way to get an ideal set up with adjustable suspension is with a set of scales so you can get the car perfectly balanced, anything else especially for day to day road use is a waste of time. My ST TDCi Mondeo has a 15mm lower ride height than a standard Mk3 Mondeo, so my Eibach springs only lowered the car 15mm at the rear and 25mm at the front against what would have been 30mm and 40mm respectively. Ride isn't any harder than before except on really bad surfaces, but still not unbearable. But I do have to be careful coming out of car parks across pavements onto steeply cambered roads or be wary around high kerbs as it does get quite close to the front bumper. Cost of springs. £170 but as a Ford employee, £90 to me. It's dialled out oversteer, I don't have to steer into corners so much as before and the car handles great even on the twisty stuff in the lanes, very little body roll. But then mine does have uprated shocks and anti roll bar as standard.

That's alright then, but you see so many people (kind word for chavs :lol:) who fit coilovers and just lower it as far as they dare with no idea whether their car is still balanced, so long as they get the look they want.:cuckoo:

well yeah but then if theyre putting them in the weeds they arent going to be too worried what it handles like.. as long as it tracked and goes in a straight line :D

I would LOVE to know where you get decent coilovers for £500. I'm looking for new suspension for my Integra R and I can't find anything under about £2k that would be a decent step up from the honda option adjustable shocks on there now!

Edit: my Mk2 golf was silly low, custom springs and I could JUST get the toes of my trainers under the skirts on it. handled like crap, thankfully something I've grown out of.

Thats what you get for being a Honda fanboy :p :lol:

Honda stuff is pretty expensive from what I've seen.

Ford stuff does seem to be cheaper. I run H&R's that use Bilstein shocks. Makes like Gaz, Avo, Leda etc... seem to be well priced. But not sure how much you'd be looking at for a DC2.
 
Weitecs are only rebound adjustable and I would guess linear rate but they don't give any info on their site or suggest they are digressive so not really properly designed for the ITR suspension. Thing is the rear suspension is a clever multi link job that changes the toe and camber under breaking to keep the back end stable when you brake very hard and most generic aftermarket stuff doesn't have the correct damping for this as the bump and rebound have to be quite different and they vary with high and low speed more than most.

Gaz and Avo are tosh IMHO, the ones I have seen are very poorly built, lots of problems. Thought Leda had gone under? Bilsteins are ok but no better quality than OEM Showas.

Problem is I had a play in one sat on Penskes and the handling was incredible but £1250+Vat per damper!!!
