i have just started a new season doing football photography,

i have a canon 7D and a sigma 120-300mm lens,

but for some reason it does not seem to focus fast enough,

have a got it on a wrong setting,

would it be anything to do with the AF point,

settings i use,

manual,
iso-100-200
shutter - average 1/1000
F2.8

but just seems a little slow to focus,

any help would be great

thank you

I've been fine with the same combo and using either the centre or an outside point. One thing that really helps the 7D (and 1DmkIII for that matter) is to slow down the AF searching. I can't remember the settings name, but it is one of the custom functions. I find a much better track if it is on the slowest or 2nd slowest. Most people assume (incorrectly) that as they want the best AF tracking it needs to be on fast.

Another thing, with any camera, using AF Servo it still needs a little time to start tracking properly so you might not get instant accuracy in a series if you've not given time to lock on.

none of the settings you list should effect how fast it focus... i ahd a sigma 120-300 and sent it to sigma as it was having problems.. they replaced the focus system and WOW! it must have slowed down over time without me realising it.. but wow what a difference when it came back.. lightining fast focus.. you may want to consider having sigma check it.. how old is it?

Sorry, this might be slightly off topic, but is there a significant difference between the speed of autofocus of sigma lenses on canon bodies, compared to the canon on canon?

I'm trying to decide whether to trade in canon 70-200 f/4 for the sigma 2.8 for the footie, and a bit concerned about that…

I used have this lens on a Nikon D2X and you had to follow focus all the time to get anything useable
