Setting up Users and organising Hard Drives

Something I need to understand before pulling trigger on a Macbook is users & hard drives. I am ok with computers, but care too much for messing around too much, like it to just work (hence why I like Macs)!

Currently have a macbook with 2 users, me and the wife. All fine, although she has some songs that I also have, so doubling up on space used. While she can view pics fine in iphoto, she is unable to use apps or videos I have on my iphone, unless I copy them into her folder. So on the next mac, i intend to just have one user which we both use. Any suggestions?

Also, am tempted by retina, although HD space is expensive. Plan to get Time capsule and one idea is to dump a load of stuff in there to free up space on HD. Stuff like LR catalogue and some movies. However, can I say download a film from itunes, stick it in the extranal drive (time capsule) and nt have it in my macbook yet sill have it on the ipad? Make sense??

Dont make it too technical please!!
 
on windows i just auto logon to my account. i tried using 2 logons and LR didnt like it.

i cant remember why, this was a year or two ago.

also im not sure how the time capsule presents itself to the system but LR doesnt like its catalogue on anything other than direct attached hard drives.
