Has anybody else done this?

I've done a few gigs over the last couple of years and all have gone progressively well. The most recent I made a small fortune for a couple of hours work and I had a really good time doing it.

I figure I need public liability insurance in case anyone trips over my tripod and breaks their neck. I also need equipment insurance I suppose, although I can probably blag that on my contents insurance.

And what about advertising? I don't have a vast amount of cash to spare, so how would/did you go about advertising?

Yellow Pages, nothing else matters.

A one column x 10cm advert (in one colour) will cost you about £450 for the year

Agree with Steep that YP is effective but have a web address in ad so people can get more (and up to date) info and see examples of work. good luck mate!

im not sure your contents insurance would cover it if it was used for business purposes, you'd probably need specific photographic insurance to cover it

I think it still works this way... If you advertise in YP you also get a 1 line listing in the business section of the phone book under your business name and a basic listing in the online yellow pages thingy.

The phone book also do their own yellow pages stylee section, but I'm not sure how effective it is.

If you are going into business you definately MUST take out liability insurance.

You only need one incident and you could be in serious (found in the bottom of a bird cage.. and it is not grit)

Your home contents will NOT cover you for scratching/injuring/maiming someone.

The times I have assisted with wedding photography we have never had public liability insurance. Then again we never used a tripod, and I was always carrying bags etc, so there was nothing that could injure anyone.

There's always the 'what if' though...

Yeah OK red underlined was probably overdoing it :embarrassed:

An aquaintance of mine was/is a delivery chap (man with a van kinda thing) and had taken it out, which was fortunate when he dropped a heavy item he was carrying on someones foot/toes. Said recipient of broken toes took a dim view of not being able to work and decided to sue him. :shake: From what I remember he wasnt found "guilty", but the insurance covered the legal side of it.

There is no legal obligation to do such. More piece of mind. It protects you from todays "sue the pants off them" society.

Your choice.

Find out about wedding fayres and try to attend them, with shots avalible for people to look at, and you can also sneak a peek at what info other people have there.

Check out regional websites advertising wedding information as well, they can put links up to websites as well.
