I've a bit of an issue with getting sharp photos when manually focusing, normally it's not anything big but today trying to do some macro work has left me nothing short of frustrated! I adjust the diopter but never seem to get it right, how should I go about adjusting it to make sure it's perfect for my eyes? I'd prefer a method that doesn't require lots of images to be taken as I'm going to be using a film body soon and don't want to waste time and money in order to adjust the diopter on that body too.

Cheers in advance.

You need to see the AF points and viewfinder information that is displayed, so look at a white sheet of paper then adjust until those are sharp. Don't have a confusing scene complicating things. Simples

Making adjustments to the Dioptre doesn't require any images being taken, or money being spent unless your eyesight is beyond the adjustable range.

To adjust the Dioptre, look through the viewfinder, half press the shutter button to activate the display in the viewfinder, and adjust the Dioptre till the characters in the display are clearest. If you can't get it sharp, then your eyesight may be out of the range of Dioptre adjustment.

If you're having trouble with the optical viewfinder I'd use the Liveview, andin fact for Macro I'd use the Liveview to get expand the view on the LCD to get the focus as accurate as I could. DX viewfinders are not as easy to focus with than FX or film viewfinders.

As in above posts

And make sure you don't do like my FIL did - set it up without his glasses on, then went out shooting - wearing said glasses and wondered why his photos were out of focus when manually focusing

He still hasn't lived it down

..and to add to Andyred's comment: be careful if you wear varifocals. Which is why I now have bifocals.
