Set me a challenge; £50...

300 miles on 70 quid

I drive a 1.4 at the minute.....0-60 in 10.5:nuts:

wanted something with a little more poke and better economy.....perfect car eh...

1.9 cdti astra is 8.4...and does about '50mpg' compared to my corsa doing '46mpg'....

O i dunno....

AJ, try taking my 200 for a week, you'll be lucky if you can get above 25mpg average lol.

I want my diesel hire car back. Go for a 2.0TDI Seat Leon, that and very nippy little things.

:agree:

My car tax is £30 a year and I AVERAGE 71.5 mpg.

Going from an MR2 and driving like a prat to a diesel and driving like a old man is saving me a fortune.

what on earth do you drive? a bicycle?

Thinking about my weekend......I've adapted my challenge to taking pictures of possible cars....

They will be nicely clean...:D

I wonder if my local aston martin dealership will let me take my camera in their showroom.

or let me test drive....

buy a s@#t load of balloons and fill them with helium, attach your camera to them and set it to small JPEG with a nice big memory card in and a battery grip. let it go and it should take you a while to chase it down again and get it back. Hopefully then you will have some nice overhead shots of peoples houses you could sell to them, plus some comical shots of you jumping through peoples gardens following a balloon mass.

very nice idea...

sounds like it could become expensive...

:cuckoo:

Compact camera, set the timer and throw into the air, trying to judge it's at the top of the arc as the shutter fires. Quite good fun and some interesting shots can be had.

Nissan Micra 1.5 dCi 82PS

Wow....I was nearly prepared to buy whatever you had.....but a Micra!

If you don't like Micra's don't worry, there will be plenty of 4x4s hot hatches and the like for sale as petrol creeps to the £6 a gallon, I'm predicting £8 - £10 a gallon by Christmas.

I know they look a bit funny and are regarded as an old man's car (which I am ) but they do have a good reputation for build quality. Also I do not have a lack of self esteem and don't need a big motor to boost my ego.:lol:

I suppose I completely deserved that reply

I've actually just looked and the 86ps version isnt too bad only 1s slower than my current car 0-62

I'm even considering a van! 52mpg......would be handy....

O i dunno....diesel just seems so expensive and petrol engines are getting better mpg...

CONFUSION!

Motorbike? Honestly - how many times is there just you in the vehicle?

I currently have 0-60 in 2.5 secs, 190mph, 45mpg. Cuts through traffic, allowed in lots of bus lanes, road tax is £60, insurance is £180 fully comp (group 20). OK that's a 1200, but a 600cc bike will still do 50-60mpg, do 0-60 in around 4-5 secs and 140-150mph, so cruise all day at motorway speeds.

Obviously I commute a fair distance, but local commuting? It's easy to get over 100mpg from some scooters.

But - if you want to feel really green about it, how about adding in less damage to the roads, less emmisions, less enviromental impact from servicing because of the smaller engine, and less environmental impact on manufacture again because of size.

and it brings good photo opportunities :D

all great points......except the biggy...

OTHER DRIVERS...

Also I carry a fair bit of equipment for work so that wouldn't be ideal..

Thanks though....very tempting

Thumbs up for a motorbike - got a 1200, its got a 20 litre tank and goes to reserve at 15 litres, by that time I have clocked up 200 miles. Just renewed my insurance for the pricely sum of £80 including breakdown cover.

And this weekend I am off with camera and bike, much easier to park in remote locations, could not count the amount of times I would be driving in my car, would see something that I would want to capture only to find I cannot park the car anywhere, but plenty of places to put the bike safely.

Also if you head for london you dont get stung for the congestion charge!

Bike insurance seems extremely reasonable......

Would it be like this for me>? 21 with 4years NCB...?

Obviously I dont mean exactly but is it all relatively cheap compared to cars?

Depends on the bike and the insurance company, I hunted around for mine, the company I was with before quoted over £100 at renewal, did a bit of searching then playing two companies off against each other, plus I am 35 with 4 years no claims.

Bike insurance depends on experience, age, location, size of bike, but generally yes, once you have these it's approx half price.
My 2.0 primera costs me twice as much as the bike. My TVR only costs a little bit more - work that out!

Other drivers
It's amazing how much you learn to predict what others are about to do. You really can read the 'body language' of the other vehicles. Plus it's not worth putting yourself in danger as you can pop past at another time.

It is amazing though in traffic how many people move to actually block your path. Jealousy? Who knows but in the grand scheme of things I doubt I hold them up at all.

As for kit - obviously not huge heavy loads but have you seen how much a copper carries on a bike? Easily as much storage with panniers/top box as there is in a small car boot like a micra.

I'll admit a bike isn't for everyone, but it works great for me as everyday transport

Sounds awesome....I love the idea....but its not ideal for me really as I have to carry big surveying equipment etc..

Certainly made me think though..
