Another post from happy Rick;

the serial number faded within days of using my EOS 350D and is now completly blank.

the number is on a sticker (on the box) but the EXIF properties report a different number for the property "Camera Body No.".

should this be the same number as the serial number? could something be dodgy with this?

i got the camera from http://www.rankhour.com/

Thanks.

Was the box sealed properly when you got it?

You could mail Canon with the serial on the box and from the exif, see what they say about possible owners of those.

Surely the serial number should be etched into the camera body a la nikon?

One that fades that quickly sounds seriously dodgy to me. The serial number of the camera should match that on the box too. Does the one marked on the camera match the exif?

It looks like powdery ink when i first got it, now that its completly faded, there isnt even any etching on the silver label!

i got it from rankhour.com and im not too chuffed, i cant really ask for a refund as i have currently damaged the focus screen so will need to get the repaired.

the serial from the Exif data is differenet from the serial that was on the body/box.

even the box looks dodgy, there seems to be stickers took off it and the serial number is on a sticker on the side (is this right?).

dammit, i wish i noticed this earlier so i could have done something about it! i got it 3 days before going on holiday so its been just over 3 weeks.

Guys, what do you think i should do about it if anything?

Cheers all!:thankyou:

Some kind of trading standards perhaps, or CAB - not sure if they could help though, but this could be anything from trying to cover up grey market goods, to perhaps you not even receiving a new camera in the first place.

You definately need to try and get to the bottom of it, could even be stolen:(

Sounds like someone has made alot of effort to pass it off as something it isnt.

Try Canon and when they ask for a serial quote the one in the Exif, tht way you will know if that actually is a serial number.

Also worth considering is this may not be the fault of your supplier - it is possible that this is an individual that may have some kind of racket going, so perhaps phone them up with your concern and see what they respond with - the damage isnt an issue, the thing you mention is that its numbers dont match up (no need to mention the damage yet).

Good Luck

Sounds well iffy to me - serial number should be engraved into the body I'd have thought. Anyone else with this type of camera - let us know where your S/N appears and in what form? Post a pic, perhaps?

I can't take a picture of mine because I dont have a p+s with me at work.

Theres a metalic sticker - one of those heavy duty ones that you find on the bottom of laptops and things, it has my serial number in a box about a third of the way down, its not etched in but I;ve had mine for a month now and its still as sharp and visible as it was when I bought it.

As Darksaber describes, its also on a recessed surface so doesnt receive unecessary abrasion - had mine a year+ and still the serial# is in mint condition, not engraved but it lasts considering most days my cameras taken with me.

Grr im so p**sed off about this, thats what i get for trying to find the cheapest price eh! :shake:

Does anyone have a contact number for Canon technical support (or the department that i should contact regarding this)

i went to https://self-service.canon-europe.com/uk/pages/ but i cant seem to find any phonenumbers...

there may be one in the box but my girlfirend has took the camera and box to AJ Johnstone in Glasgow for an estimate.

Thank you all (again!)

Could try here - as usual a nightmare trying to find a direct phone number:

But heres a list of service centres

I noticed that AJ Johnstone is on the list, perhaps you could ask them for advice.

i'm fairly sure you have 28 days to get a refund from time of purchase, but give trading standards a call hopefully they will confirm, but in general they are normally very helpful, and as you've had it just over 3 weeks you will need to get your skates on.

yup plus the fact i scratched the focus screen and it is now in with AJ Johnstones in Glasgow (£30 + VAT for replacement).

Looks like ill miss the 28 day distance selling act (or whatever its called).
i will get to the bottom of it somehow ;)

Cheers guys.

It sounds very dodgy to me. Found this article about counterfeit 350D's in New Zealand. maybe the same thing has happened in this instance

Have you contacted the company you bought it from?

******** to that

I called Canon (had to get the number from the repair shop since their site is useless), i get directed to someone in another country (india no doubt).

She didnt have a clue when trying to explain the software Serial number (exif mettag) then got on hold, someone else comes on and tells me that the serial number is the serial for the SOFTWARE, not the CAMERA... wtf? i explained to her that everyone elses (serials) seems to be the same, but she ignored this and repeated the same words about how its the software.

i asked about the faded number she said its ok because i have the serial number on the box. the warranty should still be fine.

Speaking to AJ Johnstones in glasgow they werent sure about it and its was them that gave me Canons number.

man i can feel my head about to explode... if only i could speak to someone who has a clue!.

I think she may mean the serial number of the firmware - not the software, still a few loose ends that need tidying up but Canon did say you shouldnt have any problem with the warranty.

Yeah i suppose thats all that matters - as long as the warranty is valid.

i think i will just leave things as is... no point worrying over nothing.

Regards.
