whilst in a digital photography/imaging manipulation course today, the subject of sepia came up.no-one seemed to know how/what/where it originated,ie:was it due to the process of developing film in years gone by,or was it the best/nearest they could get to colour photography?

thanks in advance

I think originally it was used to prolong chemically the life of b/w images, when in the early days the pigments used would fade after a while, sepia kept its tone.
This could be rubbish ^ I'm not sure :D
If they wanted colour, they would hand paint them with water colours or something.

no its true sepia pigment was obtained from cuttle fish it turns any silver into a sulfide & is more resistant to aging. A B&W would last as long in same conditions. now just adds a touch of age.

not that clever i googles it lol
