Sensor size vs print size

Not sure if this is in the correct forum but I will try.

Now I'm printing for clients I have come across some size issues.

Is my canon 40d crop sensor not the same size as a 10x8 print? I'm having to re-adjust to make it fit. What is my sensor the same size as in print?

Are full frame slrs the correct size like a 10x8

No.. 10x8 paper corresponds closer to 6x7 medium format film. Your camera is the same aspect (near enough) as a 35mm film. You will have to either crop the image to fit, or print with wider borders and trim the print.


Full frame sensor is the same aspect ratio as cropped sensor... just smaller.
 
The crop and full frame sensors are both 3:2 ratio so don't "naturally" fit 10x8. If you KNOW you'll be printing on a 10x8 you may want to consider this when taking the photo to give you the ability to crop without losing anything important.

I've started doing my own framing recently and it's surprisingly difficult to get frames and mounts that match what must be a common 3:2 format - I've had to send off for custom made mounts because I can't easily find the "right" ones. I've even considered buying my own mount cutting kit so I can make them to fit - maybe I've spotted a gap in the market :suspect:.

I'm surprised that given the length of time that 3:2 has been about, if you include 35mm film, that this hasn't become a more widely supported paper and framing aspect ratio.

A4 is very close to 3:2 (297x210mm).
 
Yup close - all the "A" sizes are based on a 1 to square root of 2 ratio (1:1.412) - but it still means that when using precisely cut frame mounts based on "A" sizes the image will still either need some cropping or you have to accept some of the unprinted area being visible. Not the best for properly framed prints. Suggest that if you're selling work to clients or in other areas where you want the best presentation then that is less than ideal - but you may get away with it.

But for informal prints then A4 or A3 may be "close enough" for casual purposes.
 
Most printing outlets offer 12x8 as a size.

Use this, it's 3x2, same ratio as your sensor.
