I've just got a quick (and probably daft!) question.

If you dont know the answer then its a good question..

When you're sending picture out to papers on spec throughout the match, how to make sure the paper knows that a) it's not free

I have the info in the IPTC ... As simple as "NO FREE USAGE" I put the caption.. then my details.. then that..

and also b) how much they will be paying without having first negotiated the price?

You take what they pay.. you don't tell them how much

When you're sending picture out to papers on spec throughout the match, how to make sure the paper knows that a) it's not free, and also b) how much they will be paying without having first negotiated the price?

Whenever I've sold pictures before, it's always been on based on prices we've agreed beforehand so sending them out to numerous papers of different sizes without having anything sorted beforehand is a bit of a new one.
