So we have a lens that needs a warranty repair. The way Fuji handle this is that you book the service online, and they send you postage-paid packaging for you to send the lens to them. That sounds fairly sensible. Except ...

I measured our 100-400mm lens at 232mm long overall, including lens caps, and 94mm diameter. Fuji sent us a foam-lined box with internal dimensions of 250 x 165 x 110mm, which is pretty tight, and it was lined with foam that left an internal space measuring a totally inadequate 175 x 90 x 80mm. So the only way to fit the lens in the box would be to throw away most of the padding, and that's something we weren't happy to do.

So we contacted Fuji, explained the issue to them, and they said they'd send us a larger box. Hooray. It's just arrived. But its internal dimensions are 232 x 165 x 140mm, which means that although it's broad enough and deep enough to fit the lens with a decent amount of padding, it's exactly the same length as the lens so it only just fits with no padding around the end of the lens.

We're still not happy with that. So why don't we just use a larger box? After all, when we send one of these lenses out on hire, we put it in a box measuring 350 x 200 x 200mm, with 50mm of foam lining all round and an internal cavity measuring 250 x 100 x 100mm. Why don't we just use one of them? Because Fuji insist that we use the postage-paid mailing bag we sent them, and that won't accommodate a large box.

It's doing my head in.

Presumably if you use their own packaging and it's damaged in transit, they would foot the bill (not the point, I know)?

Can't you use a larger bag and stick theirs onto it?

That's how I understand it.

No. We asked. We're not allowed to damage the packaging. Presumably it would invalidate the warranty.

Just ask them to send a even bigger box and bigger mailing bag? :D

How I see it is you contact Fuji and they send you a package to send you lens away. If you done everything as they says and the lens got damage, Fuji is liable for that.

When I send a lens to Nikon, they paid for the repair that is damage during transit. Part of it was my fault on packing but Nikon fix it for free as good will. I guess if you done everything right on Fuji's standard, anything happen is on Fuji.

We've tried that. It didn't work. I assume you're familiar with the definition of insanity which is often attributed to Einstein?

Try reverse psychology Stewart.

Log a warranty repair for a 35mm f1.4 and watch as a massive box and mailing bag suddenly arrive!

It's really poor isn't it, god knows why customer service in general is so bad these days :(

Presumably you've tried actually speaking to someone on the 'phone rather than communicating by e-mail?
