Hi. I'm new and have been told to come on here by my dad who used to be a member. He has given up his hobby and has passed down all of his equipment to me to sell but I don't know where to start when it comes to where to sell it.
There is a LARGE amount of equipment including multiple lenses, flashes, tripods etc etc etc. Some of which I know cost him a fair bit. I have had some individual pieces valued by mpb but imagine I won't be getting what their worth and my dad's feels it would be better for it all to go together as there are lots of little accessories, filters etc that would be useful to somebody. I would really appreciate any advice from anybody as my dad told me you were a friendly bunch

It would be better for your dad to sell his equipment if he's been a member in the past he probably has access to the sale forum.
You being a new member will not have access to the sales forum. You are also unlikely to get access if you are not going to contribute to other parts of the forum.

Access to the sale section is seen as privilege for the regular contributors of this forum and this forum should not be seen only as a sales platform (or that's the idea anyway as far as i know).

ebay might be a better place to sell for you.

Welcome to Talk Photography. You won't be able to post in the classified's section until you have made a number of posts so it might be better to use your Dad's old account, there is a forum for asking prices - https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/classifieds-price-checks.72/

but people on here also check MPB so it is unlikely you will get a better price selling directly on here than via MPB, you might get somewhere between the MPB price they pay you and the price they would sell for I guess.

Hello @Clouise,
I would say Ebay is your best bet, for the reasons mentioned above.
Yes, you'll have to pay commission.
Yes, you'll get the best price if the descriptions are good.

eBay is where I sell - it’s where you’re most likely to get the best price. Get all your images of your gear and wait for the £2 maximum fees to come up otherwise they take like, 10% or something silly. I’d also avoid selling lenses with cameras - get some body caps for the bodies and rear caps for the lenses.

and you’re right about MPB. They make their money buying for less than things are worth and selling for more than they’re worth.

I've heard good things about Wex (not so much mpb). If any of it is Film gear, also try Ffordes. They have always been fair with me and prices have generally matched or exceeded what would sell here. They will outright buy it off you, or they will sell on commission, whereby you get a better price, but you have to wait for it to sell. In both cases they check the gear thoroughly.

eBay is great for the bits & bobs like filters, holders, caps, and stuff that doesn't work any more.

Welcome to the forum!

MPB will give you lower than a private sale but it’s much easier to deal with and less risk too. WEX is the same but they only do store credit for most stuff they buy. TP used to be a great place to buy and sell kit between members but it hasn’t been good for a while. You often get buyers wanting it for as low as possible. Sometimes you get grey prices or even MPB trade in prices quoted to you to get the asking price down. It’s now such a faff to sell stuff on here that I usually go to MPB. tried ebay once. Got very lucky with a guy who initially wanted posting but then collected. It went ok but could easily have been scammed. I’d probably sell small low value stuff on eBay but not expensive stuff. I don’t buy from ebay as I’ve had some bad experiences with the condition they said is excellent or good as it’s very different to my excellent or good condition.

Ffordes sold a load of stuff (4 bodies, 6 lenses, a digital compact and a gimbal) for me on commission. Took about 6 weeks to shift but I got more money than if I’d just sold to them, and less hassle than eBay. I’d definitely recommend them.

You might offer the job lot to a dealer such as Ffordes or MPB, and yes they will offer less than you selling directly, but then they're doing all the work, taking certain risks, and investing in the gear as stock - in other words they're providing a service, and why should that be free?

They should honestly review the equipment on receipt, and might moderate any previous quote.

If you wanted to do all the legwork, ebay is a good marketplace, but there are some provisos. First, you need good pictures, and for something specialised like photo gear, you have to know the equipment in depth so that you can assess & describe it fully including working condition - there's a lot more to it than mere appearance. Second, you have to protect yourself by deciding for example countries that you don't sell to, avoiding buyers with little or no feedback, and all the rest. You need to be canny, & it's also quite time-consuming.

Ffordes and Dale Photographic both allow commission sale. I have sold kit with Dales this way you get the sale price - 15% commission, you don't get paid until the kit sells but if you want a low risk method of just selling this one is less hassle than eBay and you will likely get more than selling on here and certainly more than selling to MBP or WEX.

I'd vouch for eBay, and they currently have the £2 selling fees.

As long as you make sure your advert is accurate and you vet the bidders, make sure they have good feedback then I don't see any issue. You can even cancel any zero rated bids if you're unsure of someone.

I've got an 85mm FD f1.8 lens up for auction at the moment at an absolute steal compared to anywhere else. It's a good place to buy and a good place to sell if you keep your wits about you.

I should have taken my own advice about selling on eBay, what a palaver it’s become. I got an email for 3 completely free listings so decided to list my old phone after very little interest on AVF.

The good news is it sold on Tuesday, I posted it yesterday and the new owner is now a happy man with a new phone whilst I’m still waiting for eBay to actually process the payment and send it to me.

I’ve only been on eBay since 2004 but the hoops I’ve had to jump through are ridiculous, text message verification then micro-deposit bank account verification (thankfully Starling are super quick to report deposits so I got it all done on Wednesday).

eBay now appear to be saying they will have processed the payment by the 30th and then it could be 1-4 days to reach my account. That could make it over a week from me actually posting the phone to being paid.

Yep I don’t like the new system either but payment times are quicker than they quote so far ? .. only sold a couple of things so far where as before I had a few things on every week .. saying that I bought a display cabinet the other day that the seller had been messed about with .got it very cheap to . It was a local sale and i would have preferred to pay cash but the seller couldn’t send me pick up details till I had paid ,luckily my PayPal account is still active

I might have missed another EBay change then. If a seller accepts a PayPal payment, they are duty-bound to give tracking details when the item is sent.
If you use PayPal for a pickup item, you can claim you never received it as there's no tracking number issued.
