Hi all,

Not sure where to put this so thought here would be best.

I'm looking at selling some of my prints (I have just sold my first) but found it really difficult to come to a price. I don't really know anyone else that does this so cant compare to them. How do you guys work out prices or do you have a rough estimate on what you would charge.

I am selling 18x12's and 12x8's, framed and un-framed. This is a link to my album on Facebook that has pictures of the prints framed and unframed... if that helps.

I have probably under priced really as one or two people have said I could have got well more than what I asked, that's a matter of opinion though haha.

Many thanks
Matthew

Where do you want to sell them? who is your target audience?
So much of how you price things are based on the above, you match your price to the market. So, if you were selling these in a market in a town, you need to look at the economic wealth of the town, and come to a reasonable figure.
The frames are nice. One thing I would suggest, is the way you have them displayed on Facebook could be a lot better, if you don't mind me saying. The pictures of the prints without frames do nothing to the value, apart from reduce it. The shots you have of the framed ones need to be betted framed themselves, as they are cropped badly. You need to see the whole product clearly.
Have you checked to see what is being sold in the Tourist Information shop? It's not a bad place to start, to get an idea of pricing.

Thanks for the reply, and I don't mid you saying anything! This is what I need.

I had no intention of selling them the way I am just now. I set myself a goal this year to get some good shots (4-5 in total) that I was really happy with and put them into a local Art Centre when they have their open gallery for local artists. I made the Facebook page just to show them off a bit as I got a bit of interest from people who seen some that were on my own personal page and was told 'you should make your own page'.

So all this is new, I will get rid of the print pictures, as you say they aren't great and probably aren't doing anything for me. Will have another bash in better lighting for the framed prints.

Again thanks for helping out, will check out the Tourist info and will maybe go to other places where I might find other peoples work and see what they are doing.

Good for you Matthew.

If I was put on the spot and presented with framed photos like yours, I would say that I would consider £50 to £60 to be acceptable, but so much of this, as I say depends on the environment they are sold in, and the customers going there. The gallery may want a cut, so you have to write that in.
Next is when a photographer gets a name for themselves, and the demand goes up on their work, which of course will raise the value and price accordingly. If you don't have a name for yourself it's difficult to charge a lot, but you should not undervalue your work. If you can justify the value or it can be perceived by others then you must go with what you think is right.
Have you considered a stall at a market, an arts and crafts one that is?.
If you come up to London, go and check out places like Greenwich Market or Spitalfields near the City of London. There are usually plenty of guys selling framed prints. Speak to them, get a fee for it.

Thanks again for your input. You hit the mark right on, the framed print I have sold (getting picked up today :D) was for £55 so I'm pretty happy, to be honest I'm just happy I have sold one. As of yet I haven't actually said they are for sale.

I live on quite a small Island in North West Scotland so I don't have a massive audience for my work, so getting known is my main aim which the FB Page is helping. I had thought about the commission that the gallery will take, I'm not sure how much they do yet but I will be making contact soon to find out the details of when the Exhibition is going to happen (it's not the same time every year) so will get it all then.

I wouldn't mind a trip to London, been twice for very short break and really enjoyed the buzz of the place... nothing like where I am haha!

(edit) Just a wee update, first print sold :D and with taking on-board some of the advice from you and other sections on here hopefully a lot more to be sold in future!
