I have a client wanting a batch of calendars for their premises. They've asked me to look into costs and such. Theres two ways I could do it. I could license them 12 images for a year or I could produce the calendars myself. Licensing is no issue. I can work out the figures for that. Its the producing side. I'm not sure which way is best. I've got 4 options I think.

1. Produce calenders myself and sell them the entire stock for a set fee
2. Produce calendars myself and then put them in store taking a % of sales
3. Get them to put the costs up front for producing them and sell the stock at a price.
4. License them the images for a fee and tell them where they can get the calendars made.

Obviously 4 is the easiest option but it may not be the best as they're not a company used to doing such things so it might be better to help with the production of the calendars. However, I don't have £1k to throw at calendars in the hope they sell.

CAn you not get calenders produced on a smaller scale? Thus reducing your initial out goings?

I could yeah but I'm not sure how many I need. I do know that they're going to get a lot of custom through there doors and its going to be a very unique set. The first and last things they'll see will be my images for sale. So there is a good chance they'll need 1,000. I know the Capital of Culture calendar I licensed my images for last year sold out and that was 500 copies.

Out of the four options, excluding #4, I'd go for #1, as it leaves you with a clear bank account (plus profit).

You buy 1000 calenders at £1 each (for arguments sake).. you sell them to the company for £1.50, if you don't have the funds to pay for all the calenders in one go, providing you can show the bank a purchase order for them, you should be able to get them to help with the finances. You'd have to design the calender before hand, discuss printing costs etc.. but as long as you've got a definate purchase order from them, you're not hoping they'll sell, you've technically already sold them, they just haven't been delivered and paid for yet.

Not really know then tbh. Can you not order more if you need more?? ok i know im not being much help :coat:

I was planning on using www.teamcalendars.co.uk to produce them. Lets say I go with 500. Thats £3.49 each to print. To make 500 is £2050 ish. Add £1 on to actually make any money and thats basically £500 I make. That sorta seems like not much when I could license the 12 images for £100-150 each and make more. I'd have to add £2 on top to cover my fee. Thats if they go for 500. If they go for 250 thats £1142.80 with the £2 per calendar only leaves me with £500. Maybe I should just license them the images for a year and let them produce them as they see fit? I have other clients that I've licensed images to in similar ways.

It depends on how much you can negotiate the sale of the calenders for... if you're only putting £1 on, then it's not worth the hassle and you may as well license the images to them... but if you put 3 or £4 on, then you're quids in... but it's a lot more work, for not that much more return.

Might be better licensing the images IMO :)
