sell lens to fund a d300 help!

hi Gents,

I have been mulling things over a am considering selling my muched loved sigma 10-20mm to enable me to upgrade to a d300. Have recently sold my D200 so have that cash plus what i get from the sale of the 10-20. I have a nikon 17-55mm 2.8 which will take me fairly wide but i am just not sure if i should do it or not.

What do you think?

Depends how much really wide angle stuff you do (10-17)...if you do lots then you'll have a great camera but not be able to take the pics you want, if you don't then you'll enjoy an upgraded camera for almost everything you do.

May be interested in the 10-20 too.

I wouldn't sell it if I used it a lot, if you miss it you'll only want to replace it at a later date.

why did you sell the D200, if money was tight i'd sooner have a D200 and the choice of two lenses than a D300 and one

From personal experience, do not sell your lenses to fund a body!

A camera body, you will want to upgrade in all likelihood within the next 2 ~ 3 years; but the lens would last you a lot longer than that.

Also, as has been said, if this is a lens you like, and use, then you will only find yourself going to buy another one very soon. Making the financial loss all that much more.

I speak from my own experience, I sold my 70-200VR only to regret it within days. Everytime I see a thread about how wonderful that lens is, I get aches to remind me of what a fool I was to sell mine. I got the 70-300VR instead (I had issues with the weight of the 70-200VR), and everytime I looked at the pictures the 70-300VR gave me, I realised what a bigger fool I was. Point here, you will regret selling it, if it's a lens you like to use.


In other words, only think of selling your lens if you think it is obsolete to your needs.

to be honest i had plenty of cash to be able to buy one and possibly a lens to go with it and as soon as i sold the D200 the 15 year old boiler went bang along with my purchase of the d300 + lens. so just need to evaluate whats more important i suppose.

If you love your Sigma 10-20 then don't go sell it. What;'s the point of having a better body but not being able to take the kind of pictures you want to?

Lenses > Body (always true assuming you have a body, and even if you don't I'd rather a cheaper second had body and good glass than an expensive body and lesser glass)
