I'm contemplating creating a photography book for my landscape shots. I've got the money and the software to get a couple of thousand printed, but not too sure on how to go about this. I know the dimension of the book (Landscape A5) I want to create and page count etc, but quality is very important. I've looked at Blurb and a few others, but non the wiser. It appears all the ones I have seen so far all differ in prices, quality and what sizes they offer.

Much appreciated if get some recomendations, thanks.

I have seen books published by Blurb and they appeared to be very well done.

Blurb are good and they have the benefit of their own software and book store but they are very expensive. If you're confident in your own design abilities and can shift 2000 then it would probably be more cost effective to have them litho printed at a proper book printers. Try inkylittlefingers for a quote as they do both digital and litho.

Thich books and big volume you need to use a litho printer.
Next step up quality wise are press printed books, anywhere from £10 to £100 each, most labs will do decent discount on volume (circa 50%).
Then you are looking at photographic printed books, best quality but expensive for general market. Again, you will get circa 50% discount on multiples

How easy do you think it could be to sell 2,000 books of landscape photos? What would be your selling strategy? What would be an appropriate selling price?

Blurb print quality is fairly good, but their prices are not appropriate for re-sale. But you might consider printing ten or twenty for yourself and friends. It would also provide a good dummy to show to publishers if indeed the book might be commercial.

With Blurb you can use page layout (InDesign, Quark) and submit a pdf, rather than use their supplied app. They supply measurements, colour profiles (cmyk) and pdf requirements.

I seem to recall Brooks Jensen of Lenswork saying that the typical print run of a photo book (by a publisher) was about 2000. Given that they have access to their own distribution and promotional channels and such like, I'd be slightly wary of ordering so many unless you are well established with a big audience and as such are really confident in your ability to shift them. By all means think big, but you may be better off committing to a shorter run to test the market before going all out?

I guess all depends on quality of images how much you want to charge people, number of pages. Always thought for landscape photo books A5 is tad too small, but it's just my own opinion. social media is great for spreading a word, your own blog, local book shops?
