Being new to 'digital' photography, what software is needed and how do you do selective colouring ? also is it difficult to do ?

Hi Graham,
You can achieve it a number of ways and everyone will have a way that they like to do it.
Your best bet is to have a google for "Selective Colouring Tutorial".
Chances are you are going to get a lot of Photoshop tutorials and not much else.

I use Lightroom and have a few downloaded presets that remove all other colours apart from your chosen one - red, yellow, green, blue etc. Example shown.

If you choose to use photoshop it isn't difficult to do at all and a quick goole will bring up loads of tutorials on how to.

Nice photo, thanks that's helpful i've heard of Lightroom and will throw that into the equation !

There is probably other ways but I would

Select - Image - Adjustments - Desaturate

Select the History Brush (From tools bar on left)

Go over the area you want to be in colour

The lightroom example above looks excellent seems as if you can just let the programme choose to keep the colour you want. I don't know thought as I have not used Lightroom properly
