Ok i have the image below which looks great in b&w but a friend of mine has seen it and loves it and so wants it printing on canvas in b&w but here comes the twist!

I know how you lot may feel about selective colouring myself included but she's the client so here we go.

She want to have the image selective colouring with the car being in colour but wants the colour of the car changed too purple!

Is this possible and if so how would i go about it in either aperture or PS (preferablly aperture)

I really want to do this for her as she's always been there being really positive about my photography spurring me on. :)

Easy I reckon
Create a layer group
Create an adjustment layer within the grou, hue/saturation. Choose desaturate
Create an adjustment layer within the group, hue/saturation, select colourise and then move the slider so the car is what you want.
Then create a mask on the first hue/saturation. Now select layer blending options, and select shallow for the blend mode. Now mask out the car as per usual.
I only learnt this method last week, (the shallow mode), but it is really useful.

I would use the quick select tool and select the car and put this in a new layer. Convert the original layer to B&W use the curves in the new layer to change the car to blue. I am no means a PP expert, in fact far from it, but that's how I would attempt it.

^^^ See, i said i was no expert

Literally took me longer to upload the image than t did to do!

Hi, just noticed you don't have edit allowed. Hopefully you won't object, but I will take it down if you do.

Good skills

It took me a few more minutes, but I prefer to just colour the paintwork rather than chrome, glass etc :D
I'm not a fan of this type of image, but there's another rough version for you

Two weeks ago I would have done what you are suggesting Craig.
If you have photoshop, I would really recomend you give it a shot.
I am trying to do a large photo at the moment. A small square, I have taken from
to
This is done with one soften layer, masked along with a sharpen layer with: (White softens, black sharpens)

Then, I have a group, masked with: (White allows colour blends, black disables)

Within the group, I have two hue/saturation layers, one green, one blue, masked with only (White blends to green, black blends to blue)

Since I have found about the shallow depth form on the blening, it has made the edits a lot quicker and easier. Previously I might have used 5 different layers and masks with copied of the data. That just wouldn't have been possible on my laptop, this image as it is takes up 3GB with just the masks.

I think you are right about the chrome, my example was more on how to do it rather than a final result (was a small image to print to a canvas).

Did you also do something to the shadows/road? Yours seems to be blacker/blue on those areas, whereas mine is a bit of a dingy brown in comparison.

You can find selective coloring tutorials for aperture on the web. The way I do it is similar to what the guys above describe. I use a brush to convert the entire image to black and white. Then brush away the adjustment on the car only. Then in the color panel, use the color sliders to change the pale green color of the car to a purple hue. Brush that into the car and you're done. And since you're in aperture, it will have created a nice new version for you so that the original is untouched. Export that to your friend and keep the nice B/W for yourself.

Also, if you still need help after you've tried it, shoot me a PM and I'll give it a quick go when I get home.

Thanks
Rick

Thanks for the advice, i managed to do it the other day and my friend loves it. All i did was open the b&w brick to convert to black and white then opened the colour monochrome brick selected a purple and painted it in on the car.
