I've tried to follow a couple of tutorials on this but can anyone give me an idiots guide to selective colour on PS CS4? I have managed to do it but it's left the colour very dull and nowhere near as vibrant as the original image.

Thanks

either use the history brush after a B & W conversion or look in the tutorials here for layer masks.

Layer masks is the route I've been going down, but the problems I have is that the colour comes back fairly dull, even with the hardest brush, and trying to correct mistakes as per the tutorial doesn't have any effect.

Idiots guide = duplicate layer of image, convert top layer to B&W. Erase the B&W portions you don't need.

The most important point is to know when it will work.

Just like HDR its hard to pull off nicely.

I found myself doing it to every image and ruining them

Agreed, to be honest I'm just trying to learn different aspects of PS, there was one particular image I wanted to apply it to.

Always a handy thing to have in the old knowledge bank though.
