seen this on the Scotsman website today

Their property, their rules; it's as simple as that!

Love comment number 7 on that page, it's bang on !
these jobsworths have to justify their overhyped positions to make it look like thet're in charge and the public better watch out

I know the street in question, I'm pretty sure that although technically it IS a private street, I'm pretty sure it is still a public right of way (or at least classed as a public place) as the route through there was part of the old bus garage or somesuch that leads to the back of the St james shopping center.
Besides, if they want to stop ram raiders, maybe they should invest in stronger bollards rather than jobsworth security who will not be there in the middle of the night when the raiders strike!

The security are only doing what they are told to do, it is with the management you should be having grief with.

public right of way gives you the right to pass through, not to photograph anything.

It may be a public right of way, however if it is managed by a private company then they can usually impose their own rules...I say usually but it's only because I'm unsure where the street in question is.

Is it the one that comes out on St. Andrews Square by Harvey Nichols?

That's the one. Multrees Walk. The whole street is privately run, as I found out when I was nearly killed by a falling rock from (I think) the roof of Harvey Nichols. Security couldn't have been less interested, yet they're so quick to react when someone pulls out a camera.

Well as has been said in other threads. There is nothing stopping you taking pictures IN A PUBLIC PLACE. I'm pretty sure you could class that street as public.

As a follow up, today there was a flash mob (pun intended) of about two dozen photographers taking loads of photos of all the shops.
While the police were keeping an eye on things, security was strangely absent...

Correct, but the area in question is private property, just because the owners allow public access doesn't make it a "public place".....

Not too sure about that! I would suspect that a 'public place' is meant as anywhere freely accessible to the public

I would have thought so too, but previous "discussions" with Rock Steady Security and Strathclyde Police suggest otherwise

I can understand companies trying to protect there goods and property but this "public place" bit is a bit silly in my opinion. This is a shopping area for the public, private land or not there has to be a degree of common sense implimented as for all intense purposes it's a public area. Do they think that ram raiders don't walk the streets? It's all a bit crazy I think. Just another case of the world gone mad !!!!

Oh how I wish I had known about this flash mob in Multrees Walk, this is a case of security thugs showing no common sense at all.
I know a couple of shops got ram raided a couple of years ago down there but I am fairly sure the culprits didn't go around taking photos of what they were going to do.
Funny how security weren't there yesterday!

And how come nobody tried to stop them filming with a video camera??

Well done Stevie Fish
