See London in a new light at Lumiere London, 14th-17th January 2016.

Oooh! Thanks for the heads up, I'll update a meet thread to include these dates in case anyone can make it

Did anyone go? I went on Friday, even 10:30/11pm it was still incredibly, insanely busy. Also walked quite some distance to the Mall to see the final installation on the list...wasn't there! Loads of people walking around confused, no signage etc.

Fantastic concept, but would be so much better in somewhere like Bath (or any smaller city really) that isn't so congested anyway. As I understand it they had to switch most of them off on Saturday due to overcrowding.

I went, loved it but agree it would have been better in a smaller city, it was spread over too wide an area. Went on Friday night and I didn't think it was too crowded. Went back Saturday to see a couple of things I missed and the crowds were insane

How on earth did you get a 'clean' picture of the phone box?! It was about 10 deep when I was there and even waiting patiently for a while shuffling forward didn't really help!

(I'm from the Wiltshire countryside so my definition of busy is probably a little less than the average Londoners!)

A mix of shuffling forward, sitting on my arse at the front and being very lucky

Glad some people, went. I chickened out for the cold. Saw a bit on the news which probably brought out the crowds on the last day

I didn't go, but I was in that part of London on Saturday. The crowds coming out of the tube were horrendous, then every single place in chinatown had a queue outside.

I went along on Saturday, Carnaby St, Regent st and Oxford Circus weren't to bad. Once we got to Grosvenor Sq, you couldn't move. We gave up and went to PIccadilly, Leicester Sq, Trafalgar Sq.

Did get a nice clear one of the Centre Point lights. :)

The Canary Wharf Winter light festival is a much more serene event, and still on til the 22nd

Do you still need permission to take photos at Canary Wharf? Or do they turn a blind eye for these sorts of exhibitions they have?

There is no blanket ban on photography in Canary Wharf and it's extremely unlikely anyone is going to take issue with anyone photographing the exhibits unless they rock up with a load of equipment. I know others have had various issues there, but in my experience as long as you're sensible you won't even be approached, let alone have to explain yourself.

From http://group.canarywharf.com/media/film-photography-permits/

You do not necessarily require a permit if:
  • You are taking the images for solely amateur purposes and do not intend to reproduce them for media, sale or commercial benefit (for example you are a tourist, hobbyist or student); and
  • your equipment is minimal (for example, nothing more than a camera and stationary tripod); and
  • you are not causing any disruption, harm or potential harm to people, property or yourself; and
  • you are outdoors; and
  • you are not filming or photographing any building entrances or security arrangements.

Thanks for the update, the last time I went was on a TP meet and we did get approached at least twice. Someone had gotten permission so nothing happened but it did put me off going alone. Don't think anyone had a tripod either.

I was there Saturday, gutted missed the meet up thread. Got to most of west end but crowds meant missed most of kings cross.

Manic, not sure I'd do it again!!!!

Friday night was much less manic. I didn't enjoy sat with the crowds

I've always found Canary Wharf OK for taking pictures. With this light show the event people have been very nice, even offering to take picture of us with some of the lights.

The number of people we saw on Saturday at Lumiere with tripods was mad, usually you'd be told to remove them but they seemed to turn a blind eye.

I nearly when A over T, at Oxford Circus because I didn't see one with all the crowds

Just to resurrect the thread and give a bit of a heads up, the event will be running again 18-21st Jan 2018
