Secondhand...so expensive...

I was just looking around some of the secondhand camera websites...I cannot believe the price of secondhand, some are barely below new price. I guess it is a risk for a retailer providing a warranty, but that must be built in to the price they acquire stuff for too. I saw a G11 at £360, they are £399 new on Amazon, and several places do them at £369. The D700 at £1499, and at the moment new they have a battery grip worth about the difference between the new and secondhand price.

I was looking for a particular lens, but really I am a bit suprised, and I won't even mention how many sites don't bother updating. You ring up and something has already sold 'last week'.

yes have a look at ebay, silly prices on cameras etc...... and people will pay top dollar to pay from an unknown seller without warranty

We do second hand so I think I can add to this.

Most UK dealers only supply UK stock and most people selling the G11 at £369 would not be UK stock so the dealers selling any second hand would probably be selling it compared to their new price which would be over £400.

Is there anything in particular you are looking for?

Stuart

Thanks for the replies all. Strumstrum, has the city centre Jacobs got secondhand? The London Road store has a small cabinet. A few years ago they had an extensive section staffed by two people. There used to be about 5 fusty old toggers discussing the merits of the f2 version over the f2.8 whenever I went in. Ah, one day I'll be like them I thought...not so far off now... :)

I find it odd how much camera stuff goes for - in other fields most things you would expect to pay round about half-75% of the new cost depending on condition.

There are people on here expecting to get at least 85% of the value of a camera back that's been reasonably well used.

True, you wouldn't really expect to pay dealer prices when buying privately. I know there is a certain 'honour' amongst many regular sellers here to ensure goods are supplied as perfect as possible, or at least as described. However I'm sure most wouldn't entertain a claim 2 or 3 months down the line if a repair was required. Some people are quite arrogant the way they dismiss offers or any reasoning for discounts too.

Anyway, my point was the dealers, I understand some of the reasoning about UK stock, but when the G11 example i gave was 10% below new, and then wanted another ten quid for postage!!

canon L series lenses have an international warranty, so grey imports at cheaper prices are a better deal,we're being ripped off for new prices in britain, prices in america are cheaper and they also get cashback,on the other hand, people who bought canon lenses a few years ago are making a profit selling them now for upgrading to newer

Really? Canon 70-200 f4 IS is £969 from Wex. From B+H it's $1210 = £852. Add in VAT to bring it to £1001. Do the same calculation with most lenses and you'll find little difference.

You do realise that not everything the Daily Mule tells you is true?

When I bought my 70-200 F4 it was £360 secondhand and my 100-400 for £600 secondhand, both through this forum. Doesn't help all prices went up 30% or so.

I find that some of the prices asked for SH on here are on the high side!

If you want silly price have a look at Canons Ebay outlet. A lot of their factory refurbs are more expensive than brand new out of the shop.

Makes no sense

:D

they have a small used section, nothing too much though and sometimes nothing at all.. but I find the City Centre staff better than London Rd (the guy that looks too young to have the old boy twisted end moustache he has) is the best to talk to and the manager does his absolute best to get the sale, they always have for me anyway and I'm nowt special.

Maybe true but on here you can haggle a bit and almost always the kit is in top condition and if not it will say in the description. I've bought a lot of stuff from the classifieds and I've never been dissapointed.

I have a simple rule when buying second hand equipment. If the price being asked for is to high then I don't buy it. I'll ask if they will take what I'm prepared to pay and if not I don't buy. :D

That might explain why I'm still waiting to get hold of a Sigma 10-20. :D

Yes, got to agree.
Not so sure I will bother looking at 2nd hand now.

As for that out of date website business. That does my head in.
