One thing that never ceases to amaze me since becoming more interested in photography and joining forums etc. is the price that most people think their Second or even third hand cameras, lenses and accessories are worth.....what I mean is I have seen items for sale (not just on this site I might add) that are for sale for just a few ££'s less than you would expect to pay from a retailer / secondhand dealer....Am I missing something here? .....so why are secondhand goods bought off complete strangers for not much less than high street prices so attractive ?? ...... Personally I would much rather pay that 'little' bit more and not take the gamble for such a 'small' saving.
Am I the only one who thinks this way? ....what are your thoughts????
 
I rarely buy anything on ebay for this exact reason, sometimes second hand goods go for MORE than new ones??????

I've been looking at a certain type of lens over the past month and have seen it's average price on ebay almost double. Won't be long before it'll be better to get a new one!
 
I agree with you with places like Ebay, although there are advantages of buying from site members.
With the lack of production control these days, equipment previously owned if having a problem may have been return to the retailer and exchanged.
But ive seen people pay MORE than shop price for items, i guess its lack of knowledge?
 
I have been reading an article in this months DIGITAL SLR USER Mag and they talk about buying second hand gear and have guidelines of what to pay and i am a little surprised, here are a few of the prices that they have bought second hand gear for:-

nikon sb800 speedlight 77.00
sigma 70-200mmf2.8 ex hsm apo dg 200.00
fuji s2 pro 32.00
canon ef 75-300 f4-5.6 mark11 23.00
canon 100mm f2.8 macro usm/ef 100.00
nikon d40x 129.00

dont know about anyone else but i think that they are miles from reality and if i could get a sigma 70-200 f2.8 for 200 sovs I would be dreaming.
 
I recently looked at a Canon 1000D on ebay that was £40 more than the Jessops price, plus they added £10 P&P on top as well. So no prizes for guessing where I purchased the wife's Christmas pressie from. The ebay seller never mentioned the Canon cashback offer either so not sure if it's their way of making a killing, sorry, I meant living.
All I can say is do your homework first, work out what you believe is a fair price for the item and stick to it. It's so easy to get outbid and think that for another couple of quid I'll get it.

I've also been utterly amazed by the prices some sellers using the for sale section of this forum want, but to be fair, often they seem to sell the item within days.

Good luck to 'em I say - if people will pay those prices for 2nd hand gear then why not! I know where I'm selling my 2nd hand kit...!

Where the hell have they got those prices from lol. i'd buy loads of SB800's for that price lol
 
Those prices are mentally de-ranged.

I'd say about £180 for an SB-800, £375 for a Sigma 70-200 and about £150 for an S2 Pro.

No idea about the others!

Personally I am generally happy to pay about 80% of the new price, but I'll pay for if its a decent seller (I bought an SB-600 here for £115 the other day, when it was only £140 from WHE, but I knew the seller, and was happy with that)

I could not believe that they actually printed these prices as a guideline...but they did in black and white :bonk:
 
and there is a few more too..kinda makes you think that they are out of touch.

Perhaps he did a search on eBay and just noted down the prices of current auctions - ignoring the fact that the prices are somewhat irrelevant until the auction closes.

Not a very impressive advert for the magazine though.

eBay is great for accessories sometimes, though you need to be careful of the quality. I've bought lots of filters from Hong Kong, genuine article, MUCH cheaper than yuo could buy them for in the UK.

For cameras it's a total rip off (brand new anyway). Not bad for used lenses though.
 
Canon ef 75-300 f4-5.6 mark11 for £23.00? I'd like to see if the guy who wrote that article would like to sell me one? :D
 
Maybe we should send him an email with a shopping list..:lol: i wouldnt mind two of those 70-200 lenses

I'd say that eBay prices are often out of the norm for second-hand stuff and so difficult to use as a source for gathering typical used prices.
 
I have the older none dg sigma 70-200 and its looking worn and used... 200 quid would get you a borrow of it .. it wouldnt buy it thats for sure..
 
I've been looking on ebay at DSLR camera prices and must admit I would not pay the prices for second hand equipment. Would rather pay the extra for new stuff with the knowledge that I can take it back to the shop if anything was wrong with it.

I have to agree with daveb99 though I've also bought filters from Hong Kong, genuine article, cheaper than I could buy them for in the UK for my S9500.
 
i wish i could find a flash and siggy for that price lol

i would pay around 75-80% of new cost from a well known seller on here aslong as i know they have a good rep i would buy with them, even if there local or i have to drive i dont mind it for the extra peice of mind.

but with something more expensve like a camera body for example i would rather pay the extra and get a warranty

second hand prices may go up again soon i think
 
I wouldn't be selling my old s2 pro for 32 quid and in fact was only offered 140.00 for it against a d300 by mb photographic only about 3 weeks ago.
 
At the end of the day, 2nd hand prices are whatever people are prepared to pay for items.

And with the recent price increases, you can see (I can already) much inflated 2nd hand prices. Come on, 9 months ago, i got a brand new canon 70-200 F4L, for less than the going rate 2nd hand now.

You'll only see the prices of 2nd hand gear increase. However, i don't see why people are prepared to pay over the current new price on 2nd hand gear.
